Observation: Nero is a conspiracy theorist trucker

Charles Phipps

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Think about it.

He's a guy objectively wrong about how global warming...err, a supernova destroyed his home planet and immediately defaults to what Romulan propaganda said about Spock and the Federation as using it to conduct a false flag operation against his homeworld.

So he decides to seek completely unwarranted "vengeance."

It's all a motivation that is 100% wrong and a working class guy goes on a shooting spree.

Perhaps not a deliberate parallel but I always liked the fact that the villain is not one of the big epic Senator or mad scientist types.

Nero is one of my personal favorite villains exactly because of this. He is a common, every day guy who was doing his job when something completely unfortunate happen. In his grief, he had to blame someone.

Nero is a lone wolf, feeling the weight of a rage he cannot contain. In many ways, he is like Spock, a dark mirror of what he is capable of. Within the text of the film there are brief moments of reflection of that possibility:

Nero isn't just some mad senator, but a person who illustrates both the terrible consequences of a grief turned in to revenge, as well as the incredible possibility of one of Star Trek's most beloved characters, and one who would recognize the danger in the excess:

Nero is great. Fantastic villain and underappreciated.
