Oberth vs the borg

cwl

Commander
Red Shirt
why was atleast 1 Oberth class present at Wolf 359? not to mention the 2 Oberth ships seen at the battle of sector 001.

I figured it was more of a "throw everything we have at them!" tactical maneuver.
Of course, Oberth class ships being science vessels, they have superior sensor and communications capabilities, which would definitely come in handy in battle.

Not if the borg destroyes them first.;)

^ Well I didn't say they were very good at avoiding them, just that having fine tuned sensors and communications is a great asset in battle. This would of course mean that smart strategies would put these ships at the perimeter instead of right in the fray.

To me, Oberths would indeed serve best as a sensor platforms relaying tactical data to the main fleet. The only reason the Oberths would engage the Borg at Wolf 359, IMO, is if they were among the few ships left in the end and there was simply no alternative.

"Either they go down...or we do," might have the been the last words the captain of one these Oberths said.

In this case, the outcome wasn't that favorable...

'Either they go..... actually we're the ones that are going down'

There were Oberth class ships in First Contact? I thought I read somewhere once that the Oberth seen leaving Veridian III at the end of Generations was the last Oberth ever seen in Star Trek.

Probably part of the throw everything we've got at them plan, think about it, the borg are closing in on the most populated planet in the federation ready to assimilate it, I'd want every torpedeo that I could to be there.

They are referring to the "Best of Both Worlds"/"Emissary" Borg battle, not First Contact.

It's entirely possible that Oberths may act as AWACS of ECM type platforms whose job it is to confuse enemy sensors, create false signals, jam communications, etc.

There was at least one Oberth in FC as well. We see it during the first battle when the Defiant first engages the Borg.

Yep, so it would seem that's their purpose until they switch over to being cannon fodder.

I like to think that Chekov's assessment of them as "scout-class" might mean they're actually a lot more capable than we might suspect, in the ways many of you have already outlined. It certainly seems like they'd be fast enough to keep ahead of the Borg's beams, if not very capable of offensive action.

Captain J. T. Esteban, commanding, was just an idiot. :rommie:

I loved when the B-O-P decloaked he said ''what is that?'':wtf: DUDE are you serious?! The Klingon's have been useing that basic design for over a century! plus, he should have said ''raise shilds'' first, THEN ask questions!

Yeah, there was obviously a good reason he was commanding a lowly science vessel. But his poor crew... :(

I know...what a waste!:( what was starfleet thinking sending JUST a small poorly armed science vessel? they would have been better off sending a lightly maned miranda class vessel!
