Obama to name Bolden to be NASA head

Bout time!

Former astronaut Charles F. Bolden Jr. will meet with President Obama in the Oval Office on Monday morning and likely will be appointed the new NASA administrator, a senior administration official told NBC News on Thursday. If he is chosen as expected, Bolden, a veteran of four spaceflights with more than 680 hours in Earth orbit, would be the first African-American appointed to NASA's top post. Bolden retired from the Marine Corps in 2003 as a major general.

Always nice to see a former astronaut get the top position at NASA. But what about Mike Griffin? Is he getting fired or was his time in the big seat up?

I just hope that NASA can recover it's prestige of manned space flight. And I am not talking about some lousy moon base, but some cool missions, like a mission to a asteroid or something that we have never done before, but can be done on the cheap and cool!

I would like at least a manned mission beyond earth orbit, or even slightly beyond the earth-moon system, that would be cool. And a mission to a nearby asteroid would give valuable intel on those pesky space rocks some believe could smack our planet and cause all sorts of havoc, the more we know the better in that case!

How about a manned mission to a Lagrange asteroid object, that would be cool! They could even do it building a special module to attach to a Soyuz for extra thrust and living space for crying out loud! We wouldn't need the Ares craft to pull something cool like that off! They could do it between the shuttle and the Ares with us only supplying a modified spacehab module with a Thruster pack attached to it and an extra booster to get the craft to a Lagrange point.

Squiggy, has this ever come up as an option?

Mike's term expired at noon on January 20th by default. All agency heads tender their resignation at the end of the Presidential term and the incoming President can either accept or deny it.

Ah, right. Thanks.

I just read on Space.com that Bolden denies the claims. He says he hasn't been asked and so couldn't have said yes. Makes sense.

A very short post, due to time constraints. I just saw this tweet on my twitter account, from NASA:

President Obama today announced his intent to nominate General Charles Bolden, Administrator of NASA and Lori Garver, Deputy Administrator.
