NV team's reaction to WEAT streaming fiasco

My only complaint is I hate streaming, I think they should stick to the way they did it before by way of downloaing it. There are ways to do this and count how many people downloaded it.

I dont like streaming too. They said the downloads caused trouble (some fans could not download) but the streaming caused even more trouble with a majority of fans still not having seen WEAT yet.

A new stream is nowhere in sight and the bird in front of my window tells me it wont be there until late November.

... and if in desperation I turn to a torrent I will get lifetime banned.

 :guffaw: :scream:

In a way it's really not even true streaming that Magic Time's was offering the process is:

- You open up a flash video player on your browser
- The flash player then begins a strait download of the movie file to you browsers internet cache, hence the buffer meter you see in most flah players.
- as the file is downloading (and after) the video is being played from the movie file in you temp cache thru your browser.

Mostly all video sites like Youtube, Stage6, Google, etc. do it in this 'progressive' manner and as such any video you watch can them easily be copyed out of your cache and keep on your computer. The main difference is these site have massive bandwidth pipes to deal with the download overhead.

After many posts this weekend demonizing tracker sites and BT in general, it looks like they've caved in and released an official torrent. From the ST:NV forums front page:
As of 12:30 AM EDT 28-August the EXCLUSIVE NEW VOYAGES SANCTIONED TORRENT IS NOW BACK!

http://newvoyages.blogsite.org

We encourage dial up and low-speed internet connection users to utilize this torrent site.

I can't blame them for wanting to show an exact count to CBS. This is getting to the point here it could be a serious business venture. Consider that NV costs only a tiny fraction to produce of what a reality show costs.

What if you gave NV 10 times the budget — which would mean paying the cast and crew — and brought in something this good for a 1/3 the cost of a reality show. And what if it got the same ratings?

And could be streamed on the Internet, too? Folks, that's a a real business plan. But they need to show the raw numbers to CBS. So if you grab a torrent from a non-official place, you cheat them of this data, and you cheat yourself of the chance to get CBS-sanctioned Trek from NV.

So, yes, it's hard to blame them for wanting to be able to show a clear number of eyeballs. If you've downloaded it from a non-official site, you might want to wait a bit and make sure you download it again from an official, counted site. I suspect it matters.

Of course, I'd leave it to James and his people to say if I'm right.
