November/December Challenge: "When Falls the Shroud of Final Winter"

Winter is the season of endings. Crops are done growing, animals grow sluggish, people hunker down to withstand the cold, barren months. There is normally the hope that once winter passes, spring will bring new life and renewal; it is this hope that keeps all things going, that spurs pre-winter preparations.

But not this time.

This time, there is no hope, no spring renewal waiting in the wings. This time, the winter is truly a season of ending. Perhaps your character(s), original or Trek alumni, are facing the end of their lives, when the hoary fingers of age finally catch up with them. How do they face the inevitable? Or there's one last mission facing a crew, fraught with the knowledge that some or all won't be coming back. Perhaps a cosmic winter descends on a world or star system, an apocalyptic event that will see the end of all things in that area.

Will there be struggle in the face of this winter? Acceptance? Feigned ignorance? It's up to you to craft a tale to fit the above parameters. Original or established Trek characters, any time, any setting. No word limit, but let's avoid any full-length novels, lol. Questions can be posted here or directed to me via PM. Challenge to run until December 31st, with a week of voting to follow.

Edit: Let's have the entries incorporate cold, to one degree or another (pun totally intended).

Let's see what you've got!

Looking forward to it!

And on a great story that would have fared quite well against the competition if you had any.

As Woody Allen famously said: "90% of success is simply showing up."

Thanks!! rbs
