November Challenge: After the War

TimmyWl

Commodore
Commodore
Sir –

Let me be blunt in stating that following these orders to slash an already meager budget and handing over the meat of our present forces to the reconstruction efforts of the former Romulan Star Empire is suicide

I know this opinion might be politically unsound, but we are already having difficulties due to the previous directive from Earth commissioned in the wake of the unexpected attack on Captain Picard. I do point out that even with the rotten apples in the former Star Empire, it was they who gave us the sound men that did and have done no harm. Even with their visages being as inhumane (and even troll-like), the Remans were openly receptive to our ways, going to the point of adopting Western European mannerisms and even shirking their own heritage to be like us. The shift of this can be easily explained in their constant surviving with horrendous casulties, lack of proper leadership, and development thereof to something that could be capitalized on. But it was with the attack on Captain Picard that made these loyal troops ‘disappear’ for security reasons and now we are paying the price.

It pains me to employ Vorta troops on the streets. Yes, we employ them, simply because we do not have the numbers to do so. A large number of them are being tied down with the “security review” of our former allies, battling supporters of the former Union … and none of them going to the reconstruction efforts. It was a shameful thing to plead for assistance from their reformed government. It is a shameful thing having them patrol the streets, almost copying the actions of the Dominion War to the letter, putting our legitimacy as a gentle friend of the Cardassian peoples to risk, overlooking Earth’s assurances that they are in sufficient numbers to be our friend. It pains me to fill out these asinine orders to promote them in our ranks to the rates that they cannot fill. Perhaps they can – in a couple of generations – but not at the speed Earth wants.

The point is this; the survival of our legitimacy as a transitional authority is being overtly weakened due to political pressures at home. If we are robbed of the only thing that we have left – that is of our own precious peoples from Earth and the surrounding planets – we will look like fools. I cannot achieve that precious transition date with these reductions. I am having enough trouble paying these Vorta mercenaries as is – the very same people who caused the mass murder in the first place I might add – and hiring further ‘contracted private security agents’ isn’t possible. We will lapse into control of only the main cities and the transportation routes between them, not that it has occurred anyway.

We cannot continue on that course that you would have us to do, if these orders are the truth, and to do so, will only make this former union into full blown chaos. To this end, the survival of this Transitional Authority must be assured and preserved even in the face of withering support from Earth. Perhaps a deal can be reached between us and Earth on the realities of the situation. As you noted, sir, we are simply soldiers, not policy makers, but there is a potential to be used.

It is my hope that we of the Transitional Authority will not go down that dangerous path of dissolution.

Sincerely,
....

I have no idea what's going on, but the letter sure was interesting, right from the opening line!

My God.

Someone had the courage to do it.

Sometimes what's right to do isn't easy. It doesn't show results overnight. And the pampered public at home is fickle and has no patience and no stomach for sacrifice.

They wouldn't want to be abandoned if it were them instead.

Thank you VERY much again. I salute you: survival of entire NATIONS depends on getting this message.

Yeah but we should never have gone into Romulan space in the first place, they didn't have biogenic weapons. We should have finished the job on the Breen instead ;)

Anyway, interesting angle to take re the challenge Timmy, as usual your inimintable style both annoys, confounds and thrills in equal measure (that is a compliment by the way!)

I have decided to have Ralph Wiggums reply for me.

"My head just exploded. I feel fine now."

Explanation

For those whom didn't get it;

The letter is documenting the aftermath of the Dominion War, namely the security picture as well as the aftermath of Star Trek Nemesis, where a new (slave) race [The Remans] was introduced that served the Dominion War. However, as noted in the latter movie, the Remans were used as cannon fodder, and then shot down due to their overt attack on Captain Picard. It is the writer's hypothesis that once a person attacks a person such as Captain Picard, there will be immediate reprocussions for _all_ those Remans stationed with direct contact with the Federation. One of these locations (the writer guesses) is occupied Cardassian Space. Thus, the mention of the "security review" in the letter.

The letter also notes that due to the lack of the space that the Remans occupy in that area (the writer is hypothesizing that there is a very _large_ amount of Remans in there due to the War due to the lack of interest in the Federation to do the occupying and would rather explore than to clean their mess from the war) can not be filled by their fickle allies (Earth) which has put them in "Security Review". Hence, the letter notes that the Vorta had to be consulted to fill in that space, which ...decays any sense of "legitimacy" that the Federation has in the area. It should be noted that the Vorta are the very people who killed off the Cardassians in very large numbers. Occuring at the same time is the aftermath of Star Trek Nemesis, where the Romulan Star Empire dissolved in chaos. The note does state in the beginning sentence that whomever the writer of the letter is writing to, wants to transfer a very enfeebled Federation presence there, without any whim of concern that is happening in the former Cardassian Union.

Thus, the second to the last paragraph noting the very sharp future of the Transitional Authority being enfeebled, weak, and not doing their job.

That is essentially the point of the story - survival of an Authority in an occupied space in the face of zero support from Earth with a mandate that will not be filled out (the transition date is when the occupation will end btw) any time soon.

Okay, that helps a bit. Thank you. :)

A very interesting and original take on the challenge topic. A little too allusive, perhaps--a story shouldn't require an explanation almost as long as itself. ;)
