This was one of those months where I had the basic idea, and the month slipped away, then got sucker punched by the holiday. Still...managed to get this done in under 12 hours. Would like to refine it.......
During Star Trek's third season, several members of the NBC brass liked the future setting, but decided on a planet based show featuring Starbase 11. Where Star Trek was "Wagon Train To The Stars", the spin-off "Strange New World" was "Gunsmoke In Space". Featuring Percy Rodriguez as Commander Perry Stone, who ran the far flung base. Other characters tended to be recycled one off's from "Star Trek", such as Areel Shaw, Samuel Cogley and Cyrano Jones. Two other actors from "Star Trek" were recast into new characters.
While there was a regular cast, more often than not the show had anthology feel as each member was in a different profession or branch of the service. Military\political stories tended to focus on Stone, legal stories tended to focus on Shaw or Cogley. Exploration of the planet was left to Steve Costigan (the actor formerly played DeSalle on "Star Trek") and science officer Miller (also formerly on "Star Trek"). Cyrano Jones provided comedy relief as he took on the role of trader and would often find himself traveling between base and among the primitive native population.
The show was wildly successful and is one of the rare instances where the spin-off far outshone the original.
