Noticed something about the confiscated ship from STID (mild spoiler)

I noticed something about the design of Mudd's confiscated ship from Into Darkness...

Here's the profile of the ship from the original version of TOS:

And here's the ship's concept art (it was the only profile I could find):

It's the same profile!!!

Unfortunately, they redesigned the ship for Star Trek: Remastered, into this (kinda lame, toyish looking, imo) design:

I'm guessing that the designer of the ship for STID might have based it on the TOS profile of Mudd's "Aurora" Class J Cargo Ship. Which means that STID ignored ST:R, and uncannonized it in this instance, lol. And people say that Abrams doesn't respect TOS canon! ;)

Re: Noticed something about the confiscated ship from STID (mild spoil

That's fascinating. I'd never thought of the original blob ship being a inspiration, but it looks like that might have been the case.

And weirdly, when I saw the TOS-R Mudd ship, I thought they had taken inspiration from the 2009 movie with the blue nacelle caps!

And they decided it was a K'Normian vessel. K'Normians were a latex-appliance headed humanoid alien designed and described for ST:TMP, but not actually seen onscreen (as far as I've been able to ascertain), only in studio pics. Kinda explains how Harry Mudd's daughter ended up getting Bajoran-esque nose ridges in the "Countdown to Darkness" comic.

I am sorry but was this ship identified as Mudd's ship in the film?
I have only seen the film once and perhaps have missed this.

No, the ship was identified as the ship of Mudd's daughter in the tie-in comics.

Or maybe they have each their own vessel. ;)

How? She looks nothing like K'Normians. Wouldn't it be easier to say her mother was Bajoran?

I think they call it "the ship confiscated in the Mudd incident," but I could be misremembering the wording.

I'm pretty sure that was deliberate. That way the audience members who didn't read the comic (which probably would have been almost all of them) might still have attributed the reference to Harry and the episode he was featured in with that blob-of-light ship. I also noticed the similarity.

Re: Noticed something about the confiscated ship from STID (mild spoil

Mudd's ship reminds me of an updated Spindrift from Land of the Giants.

Nice catch. :techman:

I doubt that the STID production crew took the idea from the comic, probably, as stated, quite the opposite. Comics used production art or footage from the film as a base.

The guys from CBS digital responsible for TOS:R look like they have done a 1:1 scale kitbash to give it that pirate/functional look with that TOS vibe. I liked it when I saw the ep.

However, it looks like Richard Bransons SpaceShipOne has had a love child with the Galieo shuttle.

Sure. I'm just suggesting that the artist caught the alien reference, but put his appliances in the wrong place. I think most readers were anticipating Mudd's daughter to be human.

Re: Noticed something about the confiscated ship from STID (mild spoil

That was a nice ship. Now there was a Klongon blob in one TOS episode and I wonder if it may have been also used as Mudds ship...
