Non-Trekkie Seal of Approval

In going back to see Star Trek again, my mom came with us. She's seventy-odd years old and not exactly a Trek fan. Mom has been known to be hostile to Star Trek.

We got out of the theater, and she said, "I like it. I didn't think that I would, but I like it. I'm not a Star Trek fan, but this was good. It reminds me of the televised show back in the 1960s."

So there you go, J.J. A non-Trekkie is on board and wants more.

But ease off on the lens flares next movie, eh? And I'm still pissed at you for certain events regarding certain planets.

*grr!*

Edit: Why the hell don't spoilers work for me?

Of course, the big problem is that the majority of the non-fans will immediately stop caring the moment the foot leaves the theatre door... after all, they've got other movies this summer to look forward to. :S

Really, I wonder what this obsession so many 'fans' have with making sure that what they like goes mainstream...

Those fans are the kind of fans who will shell out to see the next movie, and those people count too.

Furthermore, what the heck is up with your scare quotes around 'fans'? What, do other trekkies need to prove their bona fides to you? Give me a break...

And I've always wondered why so many "diehard fans" of things (movies/TV series/musical bands) become apoplectic whenever the object of their "fandom" gains widespread acceptance? (works both ways--and by the way, you STILL don't get to decide who is a fan or not, despite your direct and indirect attempts to do so across multiple posts and threads, including the one to which I've replied)

I have a few non-trek fans who also liked the movie a lot. This kind of crossover appeal should ensure the movie's box-office success.

I think that I can use the scare quotes against those people who call themselves "fans" from one side of their mouth, and then badmouth the entire rest of the franchise and its fans out the other.

You know, like the majority of this forum.

Who's badmouthing whom? No one has the right to decide whether someone else is a true fan. That smacks of fundamentalism. It's ugly and divisive.

When I say I love this new film and all the changes that come with it, I am not badmouthing the rest of Star Trek. I think it makes me appreciate everything else more.

You may disagree, but you seem to be making ad hominem insults on other posters. And doing that is against the rules here. And it's just sucks, man.

No. You can't. You simply have no right whatsoever to decide A) what constitutes being a fan of something and B) who gets to declare he or she is a fan. Being a fan is ENTIRELY a self-identified characteristic that can be IN NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM exclusionary on the say-so of another person.

Every single one of a few thousands fucking posts on this forum that, whenever someone even managed a PEEP that may be negative about this film, were pile-ons about how the fan in question was worse than Hitler and Stalin combined and how nothing the movie could do would be as bad as anything else Trek has ever done.

And all of it, really, for the assinine idea that "Now I'll be COOL because this is COOL Trek for everyone, not GEEK Trek which made me ashamed to be alive" or something. Honestly, the amount of pandering to be accepted by the masses is pathetic. Great, Trek's now a mindless action/T&A summer popcorn series! Woo hoo! We're right up there with Transformers now!

I don't respect rules, or the people who issue them, when they're not fairly applied. Since the amount of obvious flames and trolls in this forum over the past couple of months number in the literal thousands, and nearly all of them are forgiven so long as they support the new film, then why I should bother giving respect?

The behaviour of this so-called fan base to itself has been an embarassment. It's a bunch of children discovering that they might, for a moment, be part of the 'in crowd' and are willing to crap on anything and everyone they've been with for decades in order to feel better about themselves for a fortnight.

In one month's time, the new 'cool' Trek will be replaced with the new 'cool' Transformers. The movie will be over, Hollywood's attention will be done with you, and you lot will be right back here.. only this time with a lot of pissed off people that you felt compelled to treat like shit.

Wrong. What are you so angry about? Star Trek is realistic now, oh no! (Yes, I was a fan of ST before this movie).

Oh goody. More hyperbole. Hitler AND Stalin? What is that, a Godwin'd Squared?

Your post is full of asinine overreaching and ridiculous exaggeration. Consequently, it merits no further comment except to say (well, I won't say it here--rules and all ;) ).

Not true. You can say this film sucks as much as you like. Just don't be a jerk about it and flame and troll.

Your behavior on the other hand Vance...not much more can be said. It embarrasses me that some fans are so inflexible. Makes that Onion sketch all the more accurate, unfortunately.

Your behavior gets you another warning for trolling. I'm sure you'll lose a lot of sleep over that one.

Everybody else, let's get back on topic. Thanks.

I put together an Imax night with nine of my friends, two of whom besides me like Star Trek (and that includes my fiancee, who just recently got into the show). Reviews were overwhelmingly positive. Two of my friends said they hesitated to come out because they were never into Star Trek, but they loved the movie. One of them got online and tried to read as much as she could about Star Trek so she could know what was going on. She said that when she mentioned at work that she was going to the film, her older coworkers popped up like "hmmm... did you say Star Trek?" to fill her in on all the Star Trek details.

this movie's been lots of fun, from the first time I saw it at the premier to last night at IMAX. I'm sure I'll drag my fiancee's parents to it next weekend.

Here's the thing: STAR TREK should never be an exclusive club that only the cognoscenti can appreciate.

And can we please stopping bashing "the ignorant masses"? As annoying as it is when the media unfairly stereotypes us Trekkies as basement-dwelling virgins (a breed of fandom that's more myth than reality), that doesn't mean we need to sneer at "jocks," "tweens," "mouth-breathers," and whatever other perjorative we want to throw at people who just have a casual interest in STAR TREK. You know, like our families and co-workers?

Just because a person doesn't know what a Horta is, or refers to THE VOYAGE HOME as "the one with the whales," doesn't mean they're a mindless philistine who only likes pretty special effects and explosions.

If that was the case, VAN HELSING would have been the biggest hit in the world . . . :)

Honestly, I don't think non-trekkies are the ones who are likely going to hate it.

It has mass appeal, sure, then the question becomes really how great is mass appeal? Obviously financially it's great, but if the model is what kind of movie will get the most audience are we going to move in a good direction with filmaking?
