Non-Trek: Hell Rode With Her by David Mack, New Dark Arts Novelette Posted on Tor.com

Alas, the folks at tor.com did not pay attention to the intro that I wrote (and which they have run immediately following their own erroneous statement).

The opening scene and closing paragraphs of the novelette are still part of The Midnight Front, but for space reasons Anja's confrontation with Major Tarpov and the Red Star was cut during editing.

This was in fact the first part of the Dark Arts series that I wrote, and Anja’s confrontation with her countrymen during the Great Patriotic War sets the stage for the series’ second book, The Iron Codex, in which Anja is the chief target of an international magickal arms race in 1954.

Also, a quick reminder that eBooks of The Midnight Front are on sale for just $2.99 for the next week or so (maybe longer), and the trade paperback is currently on sale for just $8.79 on Amazon. Also, its sequel The Iron Codex is available now for pre-order and will be released on January 15, 2019.
 
I finished it up last night, and I really enjoyed it. I really liked Anja in the main book, so it was nice to get a little bit more of what she was up to after she left Adair and Cade.

If you'd like to drop it into its proper place in The Midnight Front, read this novelette in the place of Chapter 45 (February, 1944) around page 349. Some of the opening and closing elements were preserved in the novel, but the novelette will show you what was originally there before we had to cut the novel down to size.

Ultimately, I think cutting it was the right call for the novel, but I'm glad this deleted story gets a chance to live on in spite of that trimming.
