Non-Trek Art: Royal Purple Motor Oil

I just finished this up for my Intro to Packaging class and thought I'd share with you guys. The assignment was to develop a labeling scheme and ultimately a complete packaging solution for a product of our choice, whether it be real or original. The products had to be in bottles...and that's about all the guidance we had. Most people did beer or soda, but I decided to go a little different route, and a little less...edible.

My whole goal was to make packaging for motor oil that makes it seem fancy, upscale, exclusive, premium...basically something more than those common plastic bottles that someone driving a Jaguar or a Rolls Royce would want in their car. I modeled the design after olive oil and wine bottles.

We needed to make 3 variations or flavors, and mine are 10W40 and 5W30 oil and Max ATF automatic transmission fluid.

That looks great! Very convincing. :)

And this is where computers have taken us: did you design the labels and packaging and apply them to real-world items, or did you model this and we're actually looking at CGI? The lamp and cord, barely in the images, makes me believe the former, but nowadays, that's not necessarily the case.

At any rate, these are outstanding - very creative and very well done.

Everything you see is real. I purchased the bottles from The Container Store and designed and printed the labels on cardstock. For the box, I designed a template and built it out of poster board and cardboard. The labels were applied with the aforementioned cardstock. I wanted to be very authentic with this project; that is real oil and ATF in those bottles. :)

Thanks for the feedback guys. :)

Those are really beautiful.

I'd never have thought motor oil containers could be something you'd consider aesthetically pleasing, which I guess was largely your point. There's something vaguely steam-punkish about them. Serious kudos. Hope your prof recognises your innovativeness.

That indeed, is extremely well-done. May I ask what fonts you used in the text? They look great.

Flux,
Can I send your images to my mother, who happens to be an Advertising freelance copy writer?

I love what you did I think that you should get a A+ from your Professor.

Sure, go for it! I'd be interested in hearing what she thinks.

BTW, the type used is Bickham Script Pro, and Trajan Pro.

Already did ,and she told me to tell you that it was very creative.

Also she thinks that you should get an A from your professor.
