No sun

I stole this from the other board I'm a member of.

The question is this: what would happen to the Earth (and everything else) if the sun suddenly vanished?

Everything on the planet would die, the atmosphere would freeze out and disappear, and what was left would orbit the center of the galaxy at the same velocity the solar system does now.

But surely with the absence of the sun, the next most massive object is Jupiter, so wouldn't everything gravitate towards that?

If you are proposing the Sun just disappeared right this moment, no, the remaining planets would not gravitate towards Jupiter. The momentum of the planets in their revolution around the Sun would no longer be restrained by its gravitational pull, resulting in the planets being flung out of the “solar system” at their current relative speed.

Without the solar influence the Earth and nearly all life would die quickly – probably within hours. The atmosphere would condense on the surface like snow and even the deepest regions of the oceans would freeze – or at least turn to slush – within days. Perhaps microscopic life would continue in the depths of the ocean where the Earth’s core would continue to warm the water enough to maintain the slush, but I am not sure what the long term effects would be for a rogue planet.

So even although all the central planets are on the same orbital plane, the gas giants would have no effect on the smaller ones? Surely moons will still orbit their parent planets?

I wouldn't say, "no effect", but it wouldn't be significant since the planets are not aligned and would be exiting what was the solar system from different points.

About the moons - that is a difficult one. I believe they would follow their parent planet on its way out, but my assumption is the orbit would be altered.

Anyone hazard a guess on this one?

It would take a few days for the planet to cool down as a lot of heat in the oceans would have to dissipate. People in iceland would probably die last as they use geothermal power which would keep them warm, if they could build air tight underground bunkers they may be able to survive and evolve into a race under ground mole people......who like Bjork!!!

The moon would continue to orbit the earth and still produce tides which would probably be the only thing that would keep earth sorta alive. The earth would probably look like a mix of Europra and the planet from that star trek episode where everyone was frozen.

Humans could survive as long as they lived underground and used geothermal power. At least oxygen for rocket fuel would be precipitated out of the atmosphere and easy to shovel into rockets....

So even although all the central planets are on the same orbital plane, the gas giants would have no effect on the smaller ones? Surely moons will still orbit their parent planets?

The orbital plane has nothing to do with it. All that matters is how massive the bodies are and how far apart each is from another.

So how long would it take for the oceans to freeze solid? How much of the lass mass would the extra volume cover? With zero solar input, would the atmosphere frezze out and settle?

Even with geothermal energy and underground food production, I doubt there'd be many survivors after a few months.

Would there be enough frozen genetic material (seeds?) to survive the >Billions year trip if Earth was lucky enough to happen upon another star system and be captured in just the right orbit? Maybe a few species could live on in another part of space...
