Well, Benz doesn't have any kids in real life.

It's the Faith Ford thing again. Plays a hot mom on TV, isn't one in RL.

So we are sticking with the themed titles?

Yay.

Re: No Ordinary Family: "No Ordinary Ring" - Oct. 12 - Grading/Discuss

Themed titles work for me, and maybe they'll switch themes eventually.

Solid episode for me, nothing really spectacular or much to say other than I enjoyed it. The foibles of high school were handled satisfactorily... I do wish they'd been using a better song to teach "dancing" from though.

Very surprised though that they didn't at all address the murder at the end of the last episode.

Re: No Ordinary Family: "No Ordinary Ring" - Oct. 12 - Grading/Discuss

I agree it was a solid episode. It was the first time that the daughter started getting on my nerves. She was very very whiny this episode. However I liked how most of them had to learn the importance of keeping a secret. It was also fun to see Jim dancing and I'm glad they used some fairly current music too with the Usher. Though it was great hearing Mambo Number 5 again.

I was hoping that a little more would happen when Jim saw that guy in the police station. The guy looked at him like he knew who Jim was. I did think it was poorly handled how Jim threw the guy off the roof with no regard for where he landed. And for him to land on a cop car, crack the window, and not even get a scratch seemed a bit too unrealistic even for a show about a superpowered family.

Let me add that Julie Benz was very hot this episode, for some reason, even more than usual. So was her assistant. When the assistant and George were at the house I thought a hook up might be in the offing, but the story didn't seem to go in that direction.

I voted average. I liked the family interraction, but the plot was a real eye-roller.

Yeah, that took me right out of it. I stood up for the show with last week's murder, but that casual creep throw was either ridiculously cartoony logic, or Jim really meant to throw him to his death. Either way, I didn't like it.

His "only friend in the department" got one whole offhand comment about her death while he was having batting practice at the beginning.

Good episode, but I thought it was a bit of a cop-out when Super-Mackey tossed that guy off a twenty story building and he landed on the police cruiser virtually unscathed. I don't mind at all if they avoid killing people (it works for Batman, unless you're a ninja or a DA) given the kid-friendly nature of the show, but if they're going to do that they shouldn't adopt Road Runner physics to avoid those deaths. He just shouldn't do things that would kill them, like throwing them off buildings. Yes, yes, there are superpowers, but that's part of the premise of the show. Normal people being fine after getting tossed from twenty stories are not.

It was good to see that the son's knowledge extends beyond mathematics to a general ability to understand, retain, and easily repeat vast amounts of information.

Ah. Wow... I missed the first three minutes, but didn't expect it to be anything critical. :wtf: Did they say if it was under investigation or seemed suspicious or anything to indicate it would be an ongoing plotline?

Re: No Ordinary Family: "No Ordinary Ring" - Oct. 12 - Grading/Discuss

^Nope, the entire thing was covered by one line. "My only friend in the department was killed"

Nope. He just said "... the only friend I had at the department was found dead last night" and then it was dropped.

Re: No Ordinary Family: "No Ordinary Ring" - Oct. 12 - Grading/Discuss

Glossing over the cop's murder was disappointing. Rather than using it as a lightning rod, for now they're just sweeping it under the carpet.

Have to give the show some credit though for showing how superhero vigilante justice and the legal system don't exactly go hand in hand.

Re: No Ordinary Family: "No Ordinary Ring" - Oct. 12 - Grading/Discuss

Mmm...Smallville has shown this. S1 "Rogue" S2 "Insurgence" "Suspect" "Witness" S5 "Exposed"...I could go on.

Re: No Ordinary Family: "No Ordinary Ring" - Oct. 12 - Grading/Discuss

Good episode, but the bad guy falling from the roof onto the police car without injury was amazingly sloppy, the last ten minutes of the episode felt very choppy and rushed.

Oh, and Dad lying to his daughter, while knowing she can read his mind, is just silly.

Re: No Ordinary Family: "No Ordinary Ring" - Oct. 12 - Grading/Discuss

The other gripe I'm having with this show for the first few episodes is how Jim is able to do all these things in a large city and nobody ever sees him. He doesn't even seem to really thoroughly look around before he does an action.

Just randomly jumping onto buildings from public sidewalks...

Re: No Ordinary Family: "No Ordinary Ring" - Oct. 12 - Grading/Discuss

^yea, I can just see the skeezy reporter episode coming.

Re: No Ordinary Family: "No Ordinary Ring" - Oct. 12 - Grading/Discuss

how does having superstrength allow you to jump really high? Ive never understood that(Hulk does it too.)

Re: No Ordinary Family: "No Ordinary Ring" - Oct. 12 - Grading/Discuss

I was writhing with embarrassment at Daphne's ambush of J.J. That is a classic sitcom plot. And Daphne is incredibly self absorbed and mean, but still superficial and whiny. She's a perfect sitcom daughter.:techman:

Which is why the Home Alone antics don't really matter. Some people professed shock at the thought this is a sitcom, but there it is. It's a pretty good one but still, a full hour is hard to sustain. The ratings are slumping so maybe we should laugh while we can.

Above average.
