No more Who instantly on Netflix?

Whofan

Fleet Captain
It seems Netflix will be taking WHO off instant December 1st. This includes a bunch of classic stories as well as the majority of the new series...this is coming at the same time Netflix is expanding their plans and streaming library.

Although the classic story streaming quality wasn't perfect (They seem to be using older, unrestored prints rather than the cleaned-up DVD versions), it was still pretty cool to have a lot of WHO to watch instead of waiting for the discs.

While it is possible, over the summer my wife and I started watching Dexter, when I read that starting July 1st, it would no longer be available. However, come July we were still able to watch it instantly.

I've also had some movies in my Instant Queue that disappeared for a while and then came back.

Let's hope if it's not the former (ie they're still there in December), it's the latter (they'll be back after a while).

Man, that sucks. I have a ton of them in my instant queue. They took off "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," too, which really annoyed me.

Where did you hear the news? Do you have a link?

I have DW Seasons 3 & 4 and TW Season 2 in my instant queue. Right now it only says that DW Season 2 will be removed on 12/01.

I hope they don't remove all of Who from streaming. That would be really annoying. I've also been catching up on a LOT of the older stuff.

By the way, I have Red Dwarf Season One in my queue and it also says it will be removed on the 1st.

It's a rotation thing. They constantly move titles in and out of the Insta-Watch categories, allowing other titles to come online. Give it a couple of months and they will come around again. Hell, they've had them selectable for instant viewing since the moment they created it, so I'm certainly not upset about Classic Who's turn to rotate out. Like I said, give it time... :techman:

Indeed. Many of their movies get rotated on and off the Instant library.

According to my Queue, Seasons 1-3 of nuWho will be taken off on December 1st, but Season 4 and the Tennant Christmas Specials will still be available.

They'll all make their way back eventually.

Could it be related to the fact the BBC is reportedly planning to take iPlayer - which also offers Doctor Who - international in the coming months? They might not want the competition.

Alex

I noticed that they've added the Ghostbusters cartoon. Who wants to see that? Not "The Real Ghostbusters" but the other one that nobody ever watched.

Or, on second thought, maybe this is why:

For those who don't want to click, the US PlayStation network has announced it will be offering episodes of Doctor Who as of December. I'd say the timing with Netflix is more than a coincidence...

Alex

Again, people are seeing shadows and conspiracies where none exist. Doctor Who is simply in the rotation out on Netflix. Whether they are showing them on iTunes, PS3 Network, SciFi channel, BBCAmerica, BBC iPlayer....it doesn't matter. None of that has anything to do with Netflix's normal business model of rotating titles off its server to make room for others. It's no more or less simple than that.

Doctor Who isn't an "exclusive" title in the US where only Netflix or only iPlayer can show them. Marketing is marketing and the more people that pick Who up and broadcast it in some way, the better off the franchise will be.

Think positive! Michael Grade has no more power. He's gone! :techman: ;)

I think this must have been a mistake on the part of Netflix. It's December 1st, and Doctor Who is still safe and sound on my Instant Queue, with nothing saying that it is going to be removed.

I've seen this several times in the past, so I don't believe that it's a "mistake," as such. I think it's more likely that the notification indicates the end of one deal allowing Netflix to stream the production in question, even when another deal is already in place that allows streaming to continue past that date. That's just a supposition, of course, but I've seen it enough times in the past that I think there's some real reason involved.

Actually, several of the Who stories I had in my queue have been bumped. There are still several that remain, though.
