No more star trek for Canadians with Netflix.

I wanted to start this thread to see if their are any other Canadians suffering from the loss of their backlog of old star trek due to the new dns code policies Netflix enforced. For any Americans reading this who are unaware, canadian Netflix content is very different from American Netflix due to international copyright laws. And unfortunately for Canadians, being that the population density of America is much higher, therefore providing far more subscribers, American Netflix has far, far more programming then it's canadian counterpart. [Content removed.] This bums me out especially since canadian Netflix only has the TNG movies on it as of this posting. we also have a service called SHOMI which at least has the original series and TNG, but lacks voy and ds9. I've heard crave has more selection as to Star trek, but it's hardly supported on alot of platforms as of yet. I managed to get through my star trek run while American Netflix was still easily accessible in canada, but in a world where physical media, especially of older shows, is getting harder and harder to find, I worry about how new Canadian trekkies will find a way to see these programs.

Thoughts?

It seems hardly fair...can you frack Netflix?
(...or is it "hack"? I get so confused, sometimes...)

Plus, you would think the whole "Shatner is a Canadian" thing would count?!?!

Hi @trekyourself ,

Parts of your post regarding illegal workarounds have been edited out as they violate the board rules regarding Intellectual Property:

As a fan site for a television show, intellectual property is an important topic for us. We cannot legally or morally condone tape-trading in episodes or downloading episodes online, and do not allow discussions on this matter. Any other copyright violations will also not be allowed.

Feel free to continue with the general topic, but without discussion of illegal practices.

Thanks!

I was going to suggest the Space channel but I just checked their website and it seems they pulled both TNG and Voyager from their schedule.

Yes, Canadian Netflix sucks but at least we still have Doctor Who.

I bought the discs. Keeps one from being denied by the whims of content providers.

I buy everything from the iTunes Store, which is not streaming. Once you've downloaded something, it can't be "denied". Yours to keep permanently. (Indeed, some of the things I've bought are no longer available on the store, but can still be played back.)

There's a BBC channel in my cable lineup (which isn't part of my package) that plays daily blocks of TNG.

but in a world where physical media, especially of older shows, is getting harder and harder to find, I worry about how new Canadian trekkies will find a way to see these programs.

OK, I'm not saying it's the cheapest option, but as of this writing, the only season of any Star Trek show not currently available in stock *as an individual release* on Amazon.ca is Voyager Season 6. And all the series also have in stock "complete series" sets. (And Voyager Season 6 is of course available as part of the Voyager complete series set.) So we may be there at some point, but right now we are not living in that world where Star Trek on physical media is hard to find. The expense is a larger limiting factor here than any type of imagined scarcity.

All of the Trek TV series are currently available for streaming with Amazon Prime, but I don't know if their full catalog is available in Canada or not (?)

^ Amazon Prime streaming is not available in Canada at all. In Canada, an $80 Amazon Prime membership gets you free two-day shipping, and free online photo storage.

Yeah.
