https://twitter.com/ncc1031/status/763881812712042500 Sources claim that the main characters name maybe 'Rainsford'. Does this tell us something? Just wondering...
Rainsford might be a reference to the protagonist from The Most Dangerous Game (Sangor Rainsford), a man who was hunted like an animal and then managed to turn the tables on his hunter (a Cossack named General Zaroff). That *might* gives us some literary clues as to what the plot of Discovery might entail. But more likely it's just a placeholder name used on casting sheets to hide the identity of the character they're casting. Or it might be a misattribution from some other source.
Plus, it looks like that tweet was sent out on August 11th, whereas "Number One" was announced publicly on August 28th. There is absolutely no other source on the Internet (I checked) for "Rainsford", not even fan speculation outside of that one unresponded-to tweet that I can find. So I don't trust it in the slightest. If it was reporting on a casting leak or something, then someone else would've done the same, and we'd see all sorts of Rainsford speculation on the internet.
I thought so too, but at least I wanted to drop the bit here and your info bout the literature connection was also very interesting.
It's a very bland name. I always loved Winter, which was the original captain's name prior to April and Pike and then Kirk for the series proper.
Memory Alpha mentions a Captain Spring too, although I'm not sure of any source on that (James Winter is from one draft script). So, April -> Spring -> Winter implies that Roddenberry was just going with random calendar names at first. Of course, Captain Pike suggests a superhero carrying a long spear. And Captain Kirk would be a superhero who operates outside of a Scottish church. And although I couldn't find anything on Google, I am sure that there must've been a "Captain Archer" at some point in the long history of comic books.
Potentially spoiling what could be a big plot point throughout the season in the title of the thread makes the spoiler tag completely redundant.
It's the name of a street in Toronto that isn't too far from the studio where they're likely filming.
Indeed. In fact, I'm surprised it took so long for anyone to say anything... I was being polite and staying quiet
It hints that the character seems to come from a culture of the West, more specifically the Anglosphere. Kor
I hope it is a placeholder. It doesn't have the right "ring" to it. It lacks that great lyrical quality all great character names have. It's kind of awkward.
I assume that Twitter accounts that carry advertising are paid by some measurement of traffic? In any event, it was good of the OP to register here on the same day that this information was Tweeted.
Is the name the reason you put a spoiler tag on the post? Cuz, y'know, the name is in the thread title....
