Nintendo DS RPGs

Plomeek Broth

Commander
Red Shirt
I am purchasing a DS solely for their huge library of RPGs. The first game I will be getting is Dragon Quest IV. Does anyone with DS RPG experience have any recommendations for which are the best ones on this handheld?

Oh boy this can be a very long list lol. Heres a couple of good ones

Final Fantasy III
FInal Fantasy IV
Chrono Trigger
The World Ends With You- this one is especially interesting, there arent too many games like it

Final Fantasy IV, and Chrono Trigger. Certainly can't go wrong there. There's also Final Fantasy V and VI available for the GBA, which the DS can play. There's also a remake of Final Fantasy III available, but I don't really like it. It's a product of its time, and as such is pretty generic and boring.

If you're looking for original stuff, while I haven't played it myself, I've heard great things about The World Ends With You.

If you're getting Dragon Quest IV, I'm assuming your familiar with the series and its particular style of gameplay... in which case, I highly recommend Dragon Quest V.

I loved DQ8 on the PS2. Time to check out the old DQ games for the DS.
There is also a very interesting super old school looking RPG called The Dark Spire for DS. Almost looks like an old PC game from the 80s. Looks promising. Anyone played this?

As others have said, the Final Fantasy games are good. The remake of IV is excellent. The remake of III is okay.

If you like tactical RPGs, there's FF Tactics A2 (sequel to FF Tactics Advance). You could play both, and in fact the DS does something special if you have both games inserted at the same time. I forget what, but I think it makes some items available that you can't get any other way.

Chrono Trigger, also. Most of the new content is garbage, but the original game is basically undamaged. There's also a new translation which I find considerably better than the original. Some may argue with me there, of course!

I've heard about "The World Ends with You" and I am very tempted to try it. I really need to get more RPGs.

I'm in the middle of DQ IV, and I'm loving it. Chrono Trigger DS was not that exciting, and I actually stopped partway through it.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time is another great one.

Zelda Phantom Hourglass! Best ever use of the stylus, in fact you don't even use the other buttons.

I'm going to mention Chrono Trigger again. Also, check out Suikoden: Tierkreis. Surprisingly good RPG. Nothing too deep, but good.

The caveat to mention with Chrono Trigger is that it still looks like the SNES version. It's been tweaked in places and has some new content, but most of it isn't very interesting.

The original game is what makes it worthwhile. Don't give up on it because the graphics aren't flashy and modern. It has one of the greatest stories of any game, once you really get into it. The beginning feels disjointed because you don't know what's going on, but once you do, it's really an excellent game.
