Night Man (Ultraverse)

EJA

Fleet Captain
Is anyone here at all familiar with the character of the Night Man, published in the 90s by Malibu Comics? Well I've read that in the storyline where the character was split in two and one version got sent into the Marvel Universe, the writer, David Quinn, ignored a lot of Night Man's past history and rewrote his background somewhat, e.g. making Rhiannon his mother, among other things. Was this anything to do with the whole "Black September" event that was going on in the Ultraverse at the time, or is there some other explanation? The Wikipedia entry on the subject isn't much help, unfortunately.

I am, but I don't remember the split all that well. The "new" NightMan was godawful, though, and clearly not the same character. It's better for your sanity to just ignore it. Marvel's swept the Ultraverse stuff completely under the rug, anyway; it's likely that Black September never even happened. Earth-93060 will never be explored again. :(

I saw the Glen Larson-produced TV adaptation of the character, and it was ridiculous. I've rarely seen a character overloaded with so many unrelated superpowers -- he had mutant powers that let him sense evil and he had a supersuit that gave him superstrength and invisibility and the kitchen sink and he had a holographic projector to give him an alibi for crimefighting. They piled him on with so many abilities that they took away any sense of danger or vulnerability, and it just came off like a bad fanfic. If the comic was like that, I'm glad I missed it.

The comic was absolutely nothing like this.

There is no explanation, he simply changed it (or so I remember).

Sounds like maybe Black September wasn't the only reality-distorting event going on around that time in the Ultraverse. It is a shame it all just fizzled out the way it did; a lot of their stuff sounds quite interesting.

Another Ultraverse character that sounds interesting to me was Mantra, a male sorceror-warrior trapped inside the body of a woman, who has to wrestle with being a superhero AND a single mother to two young children.

From what I remember, it was revealed that NightMan had a clone. One was the magik one and the other was the "original". However, I think the comics kept it vague on which one was the original-original. Eventually, the original-styled NightMan fell into the Marvel Universe and was never heard from again, while the majik continued until the title was canceled.

Christopher,
The comic NightMan was kinda like a low-rent Batman, but with the ability to hear "evil" thoughts. The show version was different by giving a host of different gadgets not present in the comic at all.

Yeah I was reading something recently about the "Nightman" show...there was apparently a lot of interference from Fox ,they suggested stuff that Larson didn't want to incorporate into the series, etc. If I find what I was reading I'll post it.

After looking round, I can't seem to find any TPBs of the Ultraverse stuff, which is a shame.

Yeah, they never reprinted it. And Marvel doesn't want to use any of the characters again, as they claim they'd have to pay royalties to the creators. This also throws the possibility of any future reprints out the window. :(

Fortunately, Malibu back issues are relatively easy to find an inexpensive. I had a large Malibu collection in the 1990s, but stupidly sold it while I was in college. I must rebuild my collection someday!
