Nicholas Meyer Chimes in About Into Darkness

And Sulu would be captain. I would be sobbing buckets by the end but at the same time, I would be ok with that, if it flowed from the theme of the film. Which, in this case, I could see that working.

Ok, what's next?
People would complain (rightly so) that characters that had an entire movie re-introducing were wasted by dying. Carol could've died, but not Spock and Kirk.

You don't have Star Trek without Spock and Kirk.

Well, sure, but fans complained that Abrams didn't do anything different enough, as well as the fact that Nick Meyer intended to kill off Spock permanently. The follow up shot on Planet Genesis of the torpedo was a studio mandated pick-up.

I think that you can kill of Kirk and Spock, if it follows from the theme of the film. Actually, I think Meyer said that at one point. The brave part of TWOK was the fact that Spock was killed and didn't come back at the end. Also, Star Trek Phase 2 was originally slated to not have Spock.

As much as I like Vin, he is no Jean-Luc. Vin is a man of few words while Jean-Luc is a verbose speaker. Maybe Richard Armitage, but not sure how he would look with his shaved head.

this is the main fatal flaw of stid. kirk coming back after 5-7 minutes after he died thereby stripping his death scene from any emotional weight unlike spock dying from TWOK.

I didn't read it that way at all. In fact, I thought it was an important thematic beat; Spock is seeking revenge for Kirk's death, but the only way to save Kirk is for him to choose to spare Khan.

Hey Spock, we need him to save Kirk.
Oh, ok.

Looking back now I did not like the spock vs khan fight scene at all. the fact that they had to give us an unnecessary action sequences of khan vs spock was a no no for me. the fight scene only proved right what some fans of tos complain about in STID. excessive action sequences in favor of story.

How many fights did Kirk get into in TOS? Often at a climactic point in the story? Were those fight scenes put in at the expense of story? Kirk even got into a fight with Khan at the end of "Space Seed", and finally defeated him by beating him unconscious.

For what it's worth, Spock never intended to fight Khan, but he lost his phaser. The neck pinch also didn't work. I'm sure after the fight started, the emotions he felt for Kirk were driving him. And in the end, it did become a fight for his life, too. It does fit into the story.

I loved the Spock/Khan fight. I've waited many years to see Spock use that Vulcan speed and strength and I wasn't disappointed.

I'm curious what xavier thinks of the fight between Kirk and Kruge, which ended STIII?

If I felt that was the point of the Kirk's death scene was to make me feel bad that Kirk was dead, then I would agree. However, I did not feel that was the point of the scene was to make me, as an audience member, think that Kirk was permanently dead. As pointed out, though an argument could be made otherwise, they really are not going to invest and entire movie establishing Kirk as a character and as captain only to kill him off.

But, I think Kirk's death is more a culmination of a personal journey of learning to be selfless rather than selfish.

Not for everyone, but definitely my take away.
