NFL: What's with all of the staph infections?

Kellen Winslow. Tom Brady. And apparently Peyton Manning, as well. Of course these guys are newsmakers to begin with, Winslow less than the other two, but it seems as if all of a sudden there's been a rash of staph infections for players from a variety of teams. Does anyone here have the medical background to explain how these are contracted, why it's so serious?

I'm not a doctor, and I don't play one on TV. But I have seen plenty of news stories over the past several years about the increasing incidence of surgical infections in the general population. Perhaps this is just a reflection of that. You just hear about it more when it's a star athlete involved. Bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics, which makes post-op infections more likely, etc.

It does seem rather strange that all these reports keep coming up. Also, I keep hearing that Cleveland has a number of incidents, to which the Winslow incident is the latest.

I don't know if it's a coincidence, but I think people should be concerned a little more.
