NFL Free Agency

Well, NFL free agency began just about 2 hours ago. Anybody interested in Derek Anderson?

The last deal on the table was three years for $20 million ($10 million guaranteed). Anderson's camp was looking for a long-term deal in the neighborhood of six years at Romo money levels, but were willing to accept a shorter deal with more cash.

I really hope Quinn is as good as he's been hyped up to be, cause if he isn't....oh boy.

Everyone talks about how great a QB Quinn will be, and that Browns GM Phil Savage knows how to evaluate talent. Considering they didn't know what they had in Anderson, and had Frye start over him, I think I'd rather stick with the fella who won 10 out of 15 games he started.

Probably the bigger news though is that the Pats still haven't reached a deal with Moss, so it looks like he'll be available.

Anyone else following free agency? Thoughts?

I'm curious to see if the Rams re-sign Isaac Bruce, or if this is really the end for him.

He's been a great Ram for a loooong time. He's a Hall of Fame player, caught the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl, and he's been a great presence for many years.

Still, business is business. He's getting older and slowing down. I think the Rams made a big mistake by letting Kevin Curtis leave. There has to be room for these young receivers to get some playing time and develop.

And now that we're down to two quarterbacks (one who has played one game in his career), I'm sure the Rams will be looking for a solid back-up on the open market.

Let's face it, the Rams need a lot of help....

:(

Yeah, that's a hard situation. He's a great player, but he's getting up there in age. It's definitely a risk.

My concerns over the Browns keeping Anderson were unwarranted. He just signed a three year deal. $24 million over three years, $14 million guaranteed. :)

The Browns also shored up their D-line, picking up Corey Williams from the Packers for a second round pick.

So far so good, but on the flip side, this now leaves the Browns without a first and second round pick in the upcoming draft.

I'm curious as to what happens to Jeremy Shockey. The Giants looked like a better team with Boss in the line up... I know it's off topic, but that's still my biggest off season question!

I will be very confused if the Niners pick up defense. They really need offensive linemen to protect Smith and Wide Recievers.

I have a question about free agency now that this thread is up. What is the rule regarding when you can and can't talk to agents. I know you can't sign until the date it starts, but you can't talk to the agents before hand to work out something? I ask because there was an article in Yahoo Sports yesterday in which I think it was the Cleveland Browns accusing the Niners of getting an edge just by talking. I thought that was allowed and widespread in the NFL.

One of the sports sites I was looking at predicted Isaac Bruce will rejoin Mike Martz in San Francisco.

I hope VERY MUCH that this is not true. I don't want to see Isaac Bruce wearing another uniform.

And I certainly could not stand to see him in a 49ers uniform. That would be an affront to all that is Righteous and Good in the world.

Twice a season to boot. There's nothing worse than seeing one of your guys go over to a division rival.

I'm hoping the Giants get some help on defense, mostly in the secondary (not that a good linebacker would hurt). A good linebacker really wouldn't hurt since Kawika Mitchell signed with the Bills. :(

Russ-

What about "The Burner" Michael Turner !!!??
Probably not staying with the Chargers. He's looking for a big deal. Last I heard is that he'll be visiting with the Falcons today.

A site I often check that has lots of info is Rotoworld.com. Here's their NFL section.

I just read that the Pats may offer Moss $10 million a year:
ESPN's John Clayton that there is a "growing chance" the Patriots will sign Randy Moss.
Clayton thinks New England will give Moss $10 million a season. All signs indicate Moss should stay, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

And back to my Brownies, it looks like Anderson's deal is for $26 million over 3 years ($14.5 million guaranteed). Corey William's deal is for $38 million over 6 years ($16.3 million guaranteed).

Sorry chief.

The 49ers seem to be going buck wild with the free agents. Playing armchair quarterback, they had better hope to hell their QB's sucked last season because of a crap O line and no receivers to speak of, and not due a lack of skill.

Smith showed a lot of skill in his second season. He had the talent and a great offensive Coordinator. I like the signing of Bruce, but I'm not understanding the signing of DeShaun Foster. They already have a running back in Gore and I thought Robinson was going to be the backup. I guess they don't have much confidence in him, which is a little sad.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

:scream:

Isaac Bruce is a class act who will always be a Ram at heart. I'm sorry to see him go like this, especially to our biggest rival.

I know Donte Stallworth is shopping around. The Rams could sure use him.

Very surprised to see the Eagles sign Asante Samuel! I kept reading how they were going to make an attempt to get him, but thought that in the end it would come to nothing. Now with a surplus of CBs if they can parlay Lito Sheppard into a receiver... that would continue to improve them.

That would be nice. They need receivers and Pass Rushers more than anything else.

Not gonna happen. The Brownies just signed him. :D

Man, the Browns are really making some great moves this free agency. They re-signed Anderson and acquired Williams, Rogers and now Donte Stallworth.

No firm details yet, but it's rumored to be about $5 million a year, with $10 million guaranteed.

I'd be really surprised if Anderson is still a Brown come draft day. They desperately want back into the first round and a quarterback controversy is already starting to begin. Then there's that whole issue with the team being lackadaisical with the announcement. From what I understand, the team didn't make the official public announcement, until after it was reported by ESPN/NFL Network, etc. Then they didn't even have a press conference. To me, that has "this is only temporary" written all over it.

And from what I can tell, most Browns fans would be just fine with that. They think he overachieved last year and they want Quinn.

There was a press conference. And in the press conference, in addition to basically saying: "You don't pay someone that much and then trade him away", GM Phil Savage said the following (grinning/laughing at times):

"We are not trading Derek Anderson in 2008. Thank you very much. We're going through 2008 with both quarterbacks."

"The thing that's amazing to me is that inside our building and upstairs, people are genuinely excited that we have both quarterbacks, people feel like, you know what, that's great. And I don't worry about what happens outside, I don't live outside the building, quite frankly, this is where I live."
But yeah, most Browns fans that visit forums and call in to radio shows want Quinn in and Anderson out NOW. Phil's not dumb enough to get rid of him though and risk the possibility of Quinn not panning out. This is the safest bet. Quinn's cost to the team is only about $2 million a year.

The only thing Quinn has proved is that nearly the entire NFL thought he wasn't good enough to be picked in the first round.

The Big Blue have taken quite a few hits in the first two days of free agency, with Torbor, Wilson & Mitchell all leaving (fortunately none of them to NFC East teams). I suspect Jerry Reese will have to open the chequebook for at least one replacement, as there isn't the depth in this year's draft to replace all 3 of 'em. He'll probably wait until all the silly money's been splashed out though before bringing someone in, just like he did with Mitchell last year.

The Browns are being very aggressive.

Nice moves so far.

The thing that has me concerned is that fact that the Broncos haven't sign Elam back up yet. He is easily one of the most important members on that team, and I sincerely hope that id they lose him, they had better have a damned good kicker lined up to replace him. They released Walker the other day, which would normally concern me, except they have Brandon Marshall.
