Abrams upcoming Star Trek film has resulted in an unprecedented backlash and caused Abrams to issue some unexpected marching orders to the visual effects and design team working on the film.
According to Abrams, they simply were not prepared for the level of disgust and outrage that this new design has prompted and "No amount of Paramount plants creating buzz and praising it on message boards can overcome this reaction. We simply don't have enough money in the marketing budget to hire that many bloggers to create a positive atmosphere for the new design."
To that end, it was decided that it would be far more cost-effective to have the team work feverishly over the weekend to create a new, more accurate design, more reflective of the traditional ship than this incarnation. "It was a lot of hard work, but we are happy with the results and we think the fans will be too," Abrams said to reporters on Monday. "The fans have spoken and we realized that we had to take a step back and re-evaluate our vision." As for the added production costs involved, "It's going to be a daunting task to recreate all of the exterior shots of the ship but we have seven months to do it and we feel it will be well worth it in the end and like I said, it's actually a lot cheaper than hiring the army of bloggers we'd need to counteract the negative response."
With that, Abrams along with visual designer Ryan Church unveiled this photo of the new ship
Wrapping up Abrams said,"We feel that Trek fans will be pleased as this ship is far more accurate than what we unveiled last week."
In other Star Trek news, it was also announced that Brannon Braga and Rick Berman will be holding a press conference this afternoon in which they plan to apologize for, "destroying the Star Trek franchise." Although Berman was unavailable for comment Braga spoke with reporters and said, "Yep... it's all our fault and we have finally decided that it's time for us to take responsibility publicly and to detail exactly how and why it happened." Braga has suggested that he and Berman are also directly responsible for the global economic crisis, the U.S. housing market collapse, and the genocide in Darfur. "With all of this attention and hatred for the new Enterprise, we felt that it was only fair to remind Star Trek fans that we're still here."
