New WoM trailer!

In fairness, I may not be the biggest lover of nuWho (indeed, when I'm a little less busy, I was planning on doing a "Hater Revisits" thread), but I did think Planet of the Dead was mostly very good. Though The New Doctor was quite rubbish to me.

I'd like to see that - quite interested in which bits of the new series you have liked/hated etc. Interesting you liked PotD - I've seen very little love for that one, though I actually liked it a lot more on the second viewing last week.

The Waters of Mars is likely, on current evidence, to smash the previous specials in terms of quality. And I cannot wait for it.

Yeah PotD hasn't been that popular with folks. I thought it was average, not bad, just, meh!

Waters of Mars looks like it'll be awesome, and I really hope it is!

agreed Planet of the Dead was average, and was not very original, and I was not keen on the giant Cyberpunk Transformer in The Next Doctor, but apart from that i liked it.

I quite liked PotD actually :(. I didn't like TND very much though. The Cyber controller thing reminded me of the X Men straight away.

Planet of the Dead isn't that popular? I find that quite odd. I thought the concept was fairly solid (something Doctor Who often lacks) and creative. Admittedly Michelle Ryan's character was about as likeable as a punch in the arm, but she's nice to look at, at least. It may not have been the finest television ever, but I didn't go away from it thinking it was one of the worst things I've ever seen, which I did from Journey's End.

Anyway, I'll probably get that thread going soon, seeing as there seems to be a bit of an appetite for it.

The concept was solid? Creatures that travel so fast they can strip a planet bare and create wormholes to other worlds yet it takes them an age to get close enough to attack our heroes? PotD was ok, and if it had been a regular episode of the series it'd have probably ratwed in the top half of the season for me, but as a Special well it wasn't...

It was more consistant than TND (The Next Doctor not Tomorrow Never Dies) but what TND did well it did brilliantly better than PotD, it just lost it once Jackson Lake was relegated to supporting role so Tennant's Doc could save the day, again! Also lost it once the giant Cyberman robot thing showed up!

But cybermen in Dickensian London, fantastic notion (the graveyard scene is phenomonal) Miss Hartigan, one of the best villains nuWho's had. Jackson Lake, an interesting character who should at least have been given the opportunity to rescue his own son while 10 saved the world. Let down by the 10 hero worship at the end as well.

I'll be honest, I only saw PotD once back in Easter, so I probably don't recall the details that well. But I remember at the time not being bothered by anything much in it, in terms of the logic of it. But then, maybe I was wearing my kind and forgiving hat that day.

The Next Doctor on the other hand, that was just a bit rubbish. It wasn't awful but...well it wasn't far off awful. But then, I think the new Cybermen aren't a patch on the original design. The sooner they disappear back to Pete's World (which they could take over for all I care) and we get our cool Mondasian ones back, the better.

I don't think the Mondasian Cybermen will come back, or at least when they come back, I expect that they will be much closer to the modern Cybermen.

What the new series brought to the table as far as Cybermen are concerned was that the writers finally did something with the original concept of an army of cyborgs trying to strip people of their humanity because they genuinely think it will make them better. With a few exceptions here and there, the Mondasian Cybermen were just generic Evil Invaders from Outer Space. Plus they came from "the twin planet of Earth". Plus they were allergic to gold. I mean, come on.

I've talked about this before, but actually the alien swarm was about the only thing I liked about PotD. Honestly, I could've done without the housefly aliens (at least a better design) and the flying double-decker.

And yeah, TND was just silly fun. Didn't RTD say in hindsight that he'd have done it a bit differently if given the chance. As with most stories though, it boils down to too much story, and not enough time.
