New stardates

If anyone noticed the stardates now make sense in the new Star Trek they are based on the actual date 2258.42 for example.

Well, at least they make more sense now. It's still unclear what exactly the digits after the comma mean, though.

Yup. The Kelvin was destroyed on 2233.04

I actually like this change.

Or, they just haven't gotten to the point where they change it yet.

Didn't Old Spock give a future stardate of 2387.?? at some point in the movie?

This is a much better system. Not only do we not have to convert to Gregorian dates but, in universe, it keeps the numbers from getting too large if the Federation lasts for centuries or milennia.

Seven-digit stardates if the UFP lasted for 1,000 years would seem like too much for them.

So is that Federation wide? So other planets and aliens have to conform to Earth dates in the Federation?

They already had to conform to Earth years underneath the old system. Because Star Trek is created by Earthlings, the Federation and Starfleet will always look disproportionately human. Particularly in the 23rd Century.

Azetbur had a point when she said the Federation was nothing more than a Homo Sapiens Only Club. Ideally it shouldn't be that way but it's almost completely how it tends to be portrayed. The stardate system just acknowledges what we actually see.

I noticed, and I like the change.

And it can be explained away - when Nero destroyed the Kelvin, he killed the guy/girl who came up with the way to make stardates work in the original timeline before he/she had a chance to implement the new system of keepin' dates for the Federation!

:rommie:

There we go, that could be the answer and settles that lol

however, that doesnt explain the Jellyfish's computer which should have used the old stardate method...

They did it because then it's easier to understand the whole time-travel thing, which otherwise would have got somewhat confusing. That's the only explanation I think. I like it.
