New Star Trek Series Information

Question:

Has anyone heard any real, viable words about a new TV Series? Not just Gossip, or What would happen if, but actual "Abrams is working with XYZ on a Pilot for "Star Trek ...."?

I've been going through TV Trekkie withdrawal. I just watched all 4 years of Enterprise in slightly less than 2 weeks.

In the future, do you think we could possibly do away with the misleading thread titles? I read "New Star Trek Series Information," and immediately, frantically clicked on the link, which implied that the OP had information about a new Trek series in production, and then all it turned out to be was a "anybody heard anything?" thread. That's really annoying.

So is Abrams the head of the franchise the way Berman was??? I'm lost.

That's strange because before I even clicked on the thread I knew it was going to be someone asking questions about any information.

Let's just call it intuition, or experience.

I doubt there has even been a serious discussion about a new series. The movie did so well I'm sure Paramount wants to ride that wave and do another,or maybe two more movies before they even think about a new show.Frankly I'm ok with that.

So we're really in another Trek 'dark age', then. Three or four years wait between new releases. I struggled during the four years between ENT and XI. God I don't envy you guys who were around for the post-TAS drought in the Seventies!

I envy them.

Because they're not going to complain about this particular drought. This is like a walk to the chemist.

I'm OK with no series for now. Let Abrams do a couple more films to really establish the new Trek before diving in with a weekly series. Give it time to gell so that when the time comes, it can be done right.

That was one of the problems with the later Trek series ... VOY and ENT suffered from burnout and overload from the Trek creative team that had been working nonstop on Trek since TNG debuted. There's no need to rush in just to create "product" you can slap the Trek name on. Abrams seems to get this, thankfully.

Abrams also has no connection to Trek TV. He has a contract with Paramount. Paramount only has the movie rights. The TV rights are owned by CBS. Abrams has no connection to CBS and CBS has show no interest in Sci Fi to even consider a Star Trek TV show. What Abram "gets" has no baring on Star Trek TV whatsoever.

Agreed...CBS hates scifi, which for once is a good thing. Doing another TREK series would be a very bad idea.

Star Trek is TV. I would rather have a tv series over movies. I also think the majority of trek fans don't want an alternate time-line series, but thats probably what will eventually happen.

If CBS were to decide to do a Star Trek TV series - and it doesn't seem to be part of their strategy right now - I'm sure they'd want to make use of the good PR and audience Abrams has created for the brand, and would synch their efforts up with his. Not to do so would be poor brand management. Whatever you may think of CBS and their lineup, they are professional and smart in how they run their business and know better than to damage a successful brand.

The number of people who know enough about Star Trek to care what reality the show takes place in, or even comprehend that there are two realities in play now, aren't enough to support a series on network TV. Star Trek on CBS would need to tap into the larger movie audience, who is just looking for something fun to watch.

I think its inevitable that a new series comes back to tv. Its cyclical. This is like 1978 all over again right now guys. A movie came out and did very well and reengergized the franchise. But as has been said before there was Trek burn out before. Not just with the production team but with the general public. Those of us on web forums are going to go see a ST movie no matter what, and probably watch a new series no matter what. But for a series to survive it has be seen by more than just the hardcore fans, it needs general popularity too. TNG had that and each series after had less and less.

I was all for ending ENT and letting the show stop for a while. I have new, challenging books to keep me happy. Let the series fade from the public eye for a while and come back recharged under someone new. Well... Paramount didn't let it rest too long and gave it to Abrams. And he did a very good job. But lets not get over excited here. It has to be a lot bigger for a new series to come back.

But I for one want a Titan series when it happens :)

Haha. For the record I hated TATV, but not because of Riker and Troi. I hated that it cheapened Enterprise by not giving them a real finale. Not that I was a huge fan or anything, it will always be TNG first and foremost with me. But it was still their finale.

In fact it shows how Enterprise was thought of doesn't it? Their own finale is used to get cameos by those two? Yikes
