New sets onboard ship. Scrap the brewery!

Like the rest of you I was not very impressed with the brewery sets, I think that ultimatley they didn't have the money to construct huge sets for engineering & shuttlebay etc.

Personally I would like to see the warp core in a traditional TMP/TNG sense but more in the white 'apple store' style of the bridge and some stainless steel/computer displays etc as well - a more traditional future-look than the brewery we ended up with.

In addition to this I would like to see more than just the old standard corridors with random doors leading to all our sets. One of the things that bothered me in the TV Shows was that blatantly they used the same corridor set that led to everything on the ship. Behind a door one scene will be sickbay and the next random door they will have the transporter room. Now I realise they couldn't afford huge sweeping sets because its a tv show on a budget... but in sickbays case I would hate to have 50 stretchers blocking the corridor trying to get in the one small random sickbay door! Im thinking big hospital style entrances and wards etc etc etc - somthing more practical!

So diversify the corridors & entrances to various rooms some more rather than same old. They can afford it now.

Cargo bays & Shuttlebays, the best glimpse we have ever had of a decent size & practical shuttlebay/cargo holds was in 1979 (TMP) - I think a big budget justifies not having to use some random huge room like in the TV Shows.

The ship is huge, show it off and make it more believable than redressing an old power station or a brewery!

I realise Abrams wanted to tell the story as best he could rather than pre-occupying himself with ensuring there is a lot of futuristic eyecandy, it's just that it would be really great if we could have both, take a leaf out of James Camerons book on this one please JJ.

Not this again!

I say keep the brewery! I think it looked great and entirely believable as the 'guts' of a giant starship.

I personally think the Giant Blue Lava Lamps of previous Treks are cheesy and need scrapping.

We got a good look at the enourmous shuttlebay of the new Enterprise, with the shuttles stacked on shelves on the walls. It looked amazing. I don't see the problem.

I agree about sickbay. For a ship the size of the new Enterprise, and a crew of around 1100 (according to the "experience the Enterprise" site) I'd expect a whole hospital on board rather than one small room like STXI, but I guess maybe we only saw one ward of a much bigger facility?

Don't be upset if they keep the brewery in the next two films. The film was the most sucessful Trek ever, and it's only a few on the internet that constantly make a fuss over things like this. It's a small but loud minority. The casual viewer probably didn't even notice.

The next movie should feature a scene in the ship's stores, which should be a redressed Walmart Supercenter.

There dosent seem to me to be any reason we cant have a traditional warpcore that all that brewery stuff feeds into; it clearly wasnt a convoluted warpcore itself, no-one would survive contact with a matter/antimatter reaction or even its antimatter or deuterium constituant parts. We probably saw the coolant system that Geordi kept shouting about on the Ent-D.

The brewery was really the one thing I just didn't like about NuEnterprise. It ruined the film for me so much that I could only see it 6 times in the theater, and now that I have it on DVD, I can't watch it more than 4 or 5 times a week before I get too upset. So I'm really showing Paramount.

Seriously, though, that was the one set that tended to take me out of the film. It didn't have the feel of being a part of a ship, at least to me. Also, having seen some of the proposed designs of the nuship, including engineering, it was even more of a letdown. The proposed set designs were incredible, but film-making realities dictated otherwise, unfortunately.

One thing I'd love to see in the next film is a crew lounge or other room with one of those viewscreen-sized floor-to-ceiling windows along the saucer rim or in the 'neck' of the ship. I always thought places like ten-forward in TNG should have had a far more amazing view than it ever did, and should have had one big window instead of lots of little ones.

Don't forget the Observation Lounge!

It was very fraustrating in TNG that we never caught a glimpse of anything out of those damn windows! Would have been nice for a camera shot that showed us the real view instead of a bunch of stars!

The only thing that has come close is the scene in TMP:DE and that one was done badly!

I never had a huge problem with the brewery, but I hope it's a little more...integrated next time. Some swirly lights projected onto the ends of the tanks doesn't really sell it to me. And give Scotty a discernible control station or mechanics to mess with. It feels weird in ST11 when Scotty yells, "I'm givin' it all she's got!" when he's just running around the place without adjusting/controlling anything. Overall though, I'll just be happy if I don't see the walls. ;)

Amen! Scrap the brewery for sure! After seeing some of the artists concepts I hate the brewery even more. Too damned much open space. And clear out the racks of shuttles from the shuttlebay while they're at it. Put them in a proper hanger in front or below the flight deck. How many shuttles does that ship need anyway? It can't be to evacuate everyone. And lets see escape pods too. We know that all of the ships have them. Modern naval ships don't carry enough planes or boats to carry everyone in an emergency. They have escape pods lining the deckrailings. Just look at any picture of a modern aircraft carrier. Finally, I'd like to see more squarefootage of ship corridors. I didn't like that it looked like the bridge, transporter room, sickbay, and the communications center were all 20 feet away from each other on the same deck. Even though I did like the two-sided turbolift acting as a passthrough.

^That wasn't a turbolift acting as a passthrough. It was an airlock (in case the bridge window is hit and breached?). The lift was the other door on the bridge, and there was another lift somewhere among the corridors elsewhere on the deck.

It's possible the main transporter room is on the same deck as the bridge now. It would make sense to have one there.

And we saw an escape pod - it's how Kirk was sent to Delta Vega. I assume there are whole racks of them that all use the same launcher? Or maybe the pods use the turbolift network?

^I hope so :)

Give it a few films, it'll grow on you.

Or at least you'll get used to it.

And then, come the "blasphemous" changes in the *next* incarnation of Trek, you'll look back on it fondly, like all those Enterprise bashers that later decided it was "pure" and "real" Trek when JJ's film was announced

It figures I don't like the new Scotty and the brewery. I mean, the fact that is called a brewery is not a good sign.

I mean, if they feel they have to show it again for some reason... fine. But if they could do without showing us that set again, I would definitely cut it out of the next movie, that's for sure.

However, I liked pretty much everything else, though.

:techman:

In the movie, it is not called a brewery - it is called "Turbine Section 3"; the reason it's been called a brewery here is because the scene was filmed at the Anheuser-Busch plant in Van Nuys (San Fernando Valley.) Some, however, think "Budgineering" has a certain ring to it.

Just popped my DVD in and checked. The portside bridge turbolift is double-sided and says "Airlock" on the door. So I guess it's all three. We did see the single-man escape pod but I don't believe that would be a viable in an abandon ship situation. Just like you wouldn't rely on a bunch of shuttles stored in one set of racks. Ideally you'd have an overabundance of escape pods spread throughout the ship and augmented by the shuttles and transporters to ensure everyone got off as quickly as possible. You wouldn't want 1000 to 2000 crew trying to make their way to the shuttlebay in an evacuation only to find that the bay took weapons fire and the shuttles can't get out. In the TNG tech manual it suggested that the pods could link together. It would look cool for all of the escape pods to link together in strings and have the shuttles tow them to safety at warp.

Oh, and no frakking brewery unless it's supposed to be a brewery.

EDIT: My bad. Checked it again. The portside turbolift says "TURBO1" on both sides of the door seam. I think that it's the corridor side that says "Airlock".

Ha, ha, ha... Yes. I knew it wasn't actually called the brewery.

I got it! Scotty turns one of the turbine sections into his private brewery. Wait; I think I suggested that on another thread.
