BBC Books has unveiled the covers for the first set of Eleventh Doctor novels coming out later this month. To no one's surprise, the DW of the new logo is being called into duty for the spine:

Not bad. I was never really a huge fan of the older design. I wonder if the book size is staying the same or are they going to move to the slightly larger format used by BBC Books for the Torchwood and Primeval novels? (Also, has anyone heard if the Tenth Doctor novels are staying in print? I believe the Ninth Doctor books aren't anymore but I could be wrong.)

Alex

Amazon.com already lists Prisoner of the Daleks as out-of-print, but I don't know about any other ones.

It's exactly the same!* Doctor & Companion on top, logo in middle, badly photoshopped story-specific picture on bottom.

*Minus having the "number" on the side.

Hmm... the storylines sound promising, and the covers look pretty sharp. But as much as I'd love to read some 11th Doctor stories, something tells me these won't really reflect the characters on screen that much.

I have a feeling the focus will be all on the plot, with just a couple of generic 11th Doctor and Amy standins instead of the quirky, unique characters we saw on TV.

yeah I know what you mean, might be worth waiting till you read some reviews before you rush out to get them.

No Gallifreyan numerals!? Terrible! :(

The first batches of ninth and tenth Doctor novels were so-so, but by the second, they'd usually nailed it-- and the second batch of eleventh Doctor novels has one by TrekBBS's own Una McCormack, so I'm sure it'll be brilliant.

Well, the writers are usually given early scripts so they can get to grips with the characters (which is one reason why only established writers who can be trusted with the scripts get these assignments). But the different deadlines in publishing and TV mean it's astonishingly rare for the writers for the first batch of tie-ins to have actually seen the actors in action (at best, they get to see some unedited rushes).

The cover for the updated Doctor Who Visual Dictionary I posted in my thread of the same name features The Eleventh Doctor pointing the sonic screwdriver at the reader with the TARDIS in the background and the new logo featured prominently at the top of the cover. I dunno if this is the final cover or not but its actually the first edition of the book to actually feature the Doctor and or his TARDIS on the cover!

I thought the Ninth Doctor books I read did a pretty good job at presenting show-accurate depictions of the Doctor and Rose.

The Tenth Doctor books I read did an excellent job with the characters from the show that appeared in the books. But of course, I mainly read the books from later in the run, so the authors could practically present Tennant or whoever in prose form.

The Doctor and Rose, yes. Captain Jack... not so much. :shifty:
Really? Other than The Deviant Strain, where no one had any sort of personality, I thought the books even did a good job with Jack. Only Human moreso than The Stealers of Dreams, but the latter made up for it in other ways.

Surprisingly I've not had any interest in reading any of the novels...the only book that i've remotely had an interest in is The Year of Martha.

I don't recall him being terribly out of character in those two, but I remember him being more generic than Jack. *shrug*

Excuse to reread! ;)

Those covers look sharp. :bolian: And while I passed on the Doctor/Donna novels, I may return to the line for Doctor/Amy, though none of the stories in this first batch scream "must get!". The one with the retro rocket ship looks intriguing though. We'll see...

Uh, what about the new logo? The new color scheme? The new font? You have an odd concept of "exactly the same". ;)

Alex

^ Yeah, but other than all those differences, they're the pretty much the same. :D Layout-wise, anyway.
