New Nintendo "DSi" coming to Japan in November

The new DSi removes the GBA slot (so, no more Guitar Hero DS for you freaks!) and ads a 3 megapixel camera and expandable SD slot. It's also smaller and will have brighter screens (maybe you can even play it outside!).

Depending on who you are, you may want to grab a DS Lite now before they're gone or you may want to wait until this new super DS comes out next year in the rest of the world.

Sadly, I think I may end up upgrading... it will be the first time that I'll have all three versions of a single console. Joy.

WAY WAY WAY TOO MUCH!

$180 for a shit camera in a DS?! I much rather buy a regular DS and a $50 camera from Walgreens (they sell Kodak).

Shouldn't be higher than $150, and the Lite should become $100.

I would expect that when it is launched in North America that they would do the Apple thing and replace the Lite with this and sell it at that price.
I guess they could sell this as a "premium" DS, but I kind of don't see them supporting two different SKUs.

If they did that they would kill themselves, that would be a terribly dumb idea. For $20 more you can get an iPhone.

Plus they had a GBA SP and Micro selling at the same time.

If Guitar Hero On Tour is not going to be playable on this (even with a new accessory), Activision are not going to be happy.

Yeah, the removal of the GBA slot seems odd... there's plenty of accessories that go in there. Though the addition of the SD slot is nice.

But I really can't believe it's taken them this long to come up with that DSiWare shop. And the lack of meaningful interaction with the Wii constantly amazes me. But yeah, this is a pass for me... none of the features are compelling enough to ditch my Lite. Plus I'm a little warry of brighter screens, the first time I turned on my Lite I went blind for a few horus :p

Actually, a lot of the games with gimmicky things wouldn't work anymore. But anyway, if you already have a DSLite, there's no reason to give it up.

It's really weird because the mp3/camera stuff is meant to appeal to casual customers who want more functionality to justify buying a game device, but the SD "DS Ware" stuff appeals to the hardcore gamer who is basically looking for a legal way to play old games on their DS.

I'll think about getting one of these. I have no games that use the GBA slot for anything, and I only have the old DS. On the other hand, I only use it from time to time, and haven't bought a new game in ages, so perhaps not.

The loss of the GBA slot is a huge blow. Half of the games I play on my DS are GBA games. A camera and SD slot are just not enough for me to upgrade, especially when they are taking away one of the best features of the system.

Yeah, there's no way that's worth it. Either I'll buy an old DS before they get replaced or a used DS after.

Meh. Sounds pretty pointless to me too. But understandable that they're trying to retire the GBA to the junkpile of history. the camera seems strange though, as I seem to recall Nintendo saying they were going to concentrate on a gaming machine rather than adding a music/video player, cel phone attachment, etc. Me personally though, not interested. I love my DS Lite, but only have it because it was a birthday present. I've avoided the whole handheld/console gaming genre just because I refuse to play the "Now introducing the Gamedongle 2!" game every couple of years.

Currently playing the GBA version of Final Fantasy V.
