New Movie?

GMTV, those not so closet fans of all things Who and Barrowman, have just mentioned there is to be a Who movie starring the boy Tennant. I can't see another thread on this, so hence this thread. Am I late to the party as per? Do all the other good folk of this fine forum already know about this? Let me tell you, it's cheered my morning up considerably. :D

To the fair, I only had one eye on the tv, but they showed a press cutting (not sure from which newspaper) and they mentioned Tennant's fee and also they said that RTD said that only Tennant could be the big screen Doctor. I think they were reporting it as fact rather than rumour.

ETA: Just popped over to The Scum website. It's still all supposition and reports of negociations. Presumably GMTV were reporting on that report. Okay, back to your seats, everyone...

Only Tennant could be the big screen Doctor, eh ? Hah. I beg to differ... There's McGann for starters. Eccleston too.. And who knows whats to come ? Not to mention the classic doctors if you could somehow de-age them sufficiently..

There is no film. It's quite amazing how a simple and clear comment from Moffatt "I wouldn't be against the idea as long as long as it didn't interfere with the TV series" has transformed into "There's a film on the way!"

It's no secret that the BBC has wanted to cash in on a film version for decades, so I'm certain they are constantly exploring the possibility. It doesn't mean it's going to happen soon, but I could easily see a Tennant/Piper film made in the future, even after Tennant has stopped making the television programme.

Again, massive grains of salt here, probably whole salt shakers would be a good idea, but one of the usual reliable sources at DWF has said that there's been some discussion of a possible movie, which would star Tennant and Piper and be produced in a way that kept it from getting in the way of the TV series (and thus, I assume, be made after Tennant leaves). Again, he says this is nothing remotely definite, just an idea being floated, which given the show's success isn't so hard to buy. And "Journey's End" does set up a scenario where you could have a Tennant/Piper film without trying to squeeze an epic movie into series two...

Except as far as the public is concerned Tennant is Doctor Who. McGann is some bloke who appeared in a one-off TV movie over 10 years ago, and Eccleston is history.

And I'm sure you could make a new movie with Tom Baker or Peter Davison as the Doctor, but be prepared to lose out on a huge chunk of potential audience.

Any Doctor Who movie would have to cater to the public at large, not to a few fans who want a McGann movie.

God just imagine being the 11th Doctor, how the heck are you supposed to cement your tenure as The Doctor when Tennant is still prancing about on film?

And the Doctor and Rose, again! agh! :scream:

Unless the plan is for a
post Journey's End film featuring the 'mortal' doctor.

which is what i believe Brendan was alluding to...

Oh, jeez. Anyone remember last year, that guy who insisted he had inside info that a new McGann movie was in the works?

It's not about whether we want a McGann movie. I just want a frikken' TIME WAR movie!!!!!

Really, considering the broad canvases that the TV series usually uses anyway, the Time War seems like the only event large enough to justify a big screen outing. Otherwise, all you have is a puffed up TV episode (like Star Trek: Insurrection or The X-Files: I Want to Believe).

This is why I was against them bringing back Rose in the finale, no matter how good the story might have been. All it's done is brought her back to the fore in the public's conciousness in regards to Doctor Who, just as we were finally beginning to move on.

The audience has moved on from Rose. Two companions have come and gone since she left, and if anything the show's performance has improved. Her return for some guest appearances doesn't mean the show hasn't moved on, any more than Martha's or Captain Jack's return means the same about them. Former regulars return for guest shots all the time in TV shows. Even Doctor Who used to do it- look at "The Five Doctors" (a remarkably similar enterprise to the series four finale) or the Brigadier's appearances over the years. (There were also plans to bring Sarah Jane or Leela back during the transition from Tom Baker to Peter Davison, but both actresses declined.) Fandom is very touchy about Rose's popularity and legacy, but the general audience doesn't share those hang-ups. They're perfectly capable of seeing her return for a few episodes or a movie without making her central to Doctor Who again.

official report today on negotiations about the movie.

he's only got 5 more eps left, but will agree to do a full 5th season if they include a movie. so prelim groundwork is going on with the movie like finding funding. if the movie is a no go, we'll have a very short 5th season or a midseason doc regeneration.

it was noted that someone wanted catherine zeta-jones to play the doc's companion in the movie.

All true, however Rose was still being mentioned almost all the way through series three in one way or another. Same goes for series four, where a big thing is made of Rose returning (especially in the TV papers).

Thankfully they didn't bring Sarah back, it would have been far too soon.
