New King Kong remake being made

20th Century Fox is developing an animated take on the 1933 classic King Kong, Deadline reports.

Said to be an modern re-telling of the "beauty and the beast" tale and told from Kong's point of view, Christian Magalhaes and Robert Snow (who previously teamed for a short entitled "Bunny", directed by Snow) are attached to draft the project with Shawn Levy's company, 21 Laps, producing. Mike Weber, who holds the story credit, is also producing.

Since the Merian C. Cooper-produced original, King Kong has been remade or reimagined several times over, including in a direct sequel (also released in 1933) entitled Son of Kong. Two remakes were also done, one in 1976 (with a 1986 sequel King Kong Lives) and, more recently, a 2005 version directed by Peter Jackson.

Damn, this ape is harder to kill than Bond! I hope it won't be as boring as the Peter Jackson version, which was a hour longer than it needed to be.

I never get tired of the original, so I can see where the temptation to keep repeating it comes from.

I'm going to guess an animated film with King Kong as the POV character is a pretty radically different approach than Jackson's epic. When I first saw the title I was wondering if someone was going to try and top that.

I wonder what kind of animation will be used. CGI, I assume, but, for perhaps obvious reasons something close to Willis O'Brien's approach would amuse me.

At first I was thinking "Already?!?!" but this seems to be a very different approach, so it looks like there's no issue with that.

But I didn't like the 2005 King Kong anyway. I'll take the original any day. I even have Son of Kong. :D

I don't see there being much interest in this. I didn't really like the Jackson remake on the first watch, but it's become one of my favorite films after repeat viewing.

Never been a big fan of any of the Kong films (though the 1970s one was pretty amusing), although if someone remade King Kong Vs. Godzilla I'd probably go see that.

Love the 1933 version, hate the Peter Jackson version. This seems like it's going to be a bit different so I'm interested to see how it will work out.

3D computer animation would be a bit redundant, too much like Jackson's approach. If they're going for a Beauty and the Beast fairy-tale quality, I think traditional 2D animation would be the way to go. It would also be the best way to make it visually distinctive from the other versions.

I was very surprised and impressed with Peter Jackson's King Kong, so I do wonder why we need another movie on the same story so soon not even been 10 years.

When I read the 3D comment, I thought of the cartoony Pixar-style animation as opposed to "realistic" 3D animation.

As cool as it would be to see a moody, atmospheric animated version... I can't exactly say I'm dying to see the story retold again anytime soon. And I'm sure most audiences would feel the same way.

As for Jackson's version, it's a shame he had to get so self-indulgent with it. Because there's a LOT in there he got right. Unfortunately there just wasn't enough story there to justify the epic length.

Yeah, there's a lot of different animation styles, no reason that CG animation need be like PJ's.

But by the same token, there's no reason that all animation has to be 3D. As I said, the best way to make the look as distinct from other versions as possible and to capture the Disneyesque fairy-tale flavor they're reportedly going for is with traditional 2D animation, an art form that's still just as valid as it ever was, and far too little utilized in feature films these days.

God I'm so tired of movies making the same things over and over again. Come on! Think of something new. The /filmcast talks about this in their podcast about how the new idea of movie making is based on marketing and sales - not on ideas or stories. Brand name recognition. Sucks!!! I want more movies like Winter's Bone and even Easy A! No more King Kong remakes. If you want to screw up a classic - how about Attack of the 50ft Woman or something with giant ants in it.

I've never understood the dislike over Peter Jackson's King Kong. I really enjoyed in its own right and it doesn't take away anything from my enjoyment of the '33 original.
