1. Add Stellaris to your wishlist and wait for a sale. They come around pretty frequently.
2. Play the un-modded Stellaris FIRST, with the Hint/Guide mode on maximum. This will help you get to grips with how Stellaris as a game works, before switching to the Trek version.
3. It saves at any point so don't feel overwhelmed- you can play a little bit at a time and still make progress.

I downloaded the vanilla version and am a giving it a try now, what did you think of the ST mod if you used it?

1. If you wanna play as the Federation, you have to start as one of the four founding members (Earth, Andoria, Vulcan, or Tellar) and form a Coalition. The Federation trigger event happens randomly at one point. Bonus tip, the Federation will take on the ethics of the players empire. So, for example, if you are United Earth you will not be able to declare wars of aggression. Only liberation wars or defensive wars. If you play as the Andorian Empire, then the Federation can conquer other empires.

2. The base game has this, so I assume it also happens in the mod. The more planets you have, the longer it takes to research something. Every planet has a research penalty tied to it. Currently the base game has something that fans do called the one planet challenge. Its been learned that if you have one planet and control space through influence stations, you can race though the tech tree.

3. United Earth has the most fleshed out story events. The Xindi event happens (and you can lose and still keep playing), Augments, Terra Prime, even a Mars revolutionary war.

4. If you are the Federation, one tip I have heard but haven't done myself requires brief background. When the Federation forms, member planets become a special type of empire classified as "Federation Member". The home system is controlled by them, and they no longer expand. This is useful in the beginning of the game because if you go to war then all their fleets come to help you. In the late game their fleets are terribly small. Well I've learned that you can cede planets to Federation members. The more planets they control, the more ships they can build, which leads to more targets for enemies to deal with.

5. Every planet needs a starbase. Just do it.
