Green Lantern's Light!

I looked through a few pages and couldn't find a GL movie discussion thread. Anyway Super Hero Hype has the first picture of the power battery.

I think it looks very cool.

Re: Green Lantern's Light!

Looks mighty different from the comics version, but what I really care about is the tone of the script. If this thing is played for laughs OR is too "grim 'n gritty", I'll be pissed off.

Re: Green Lantern's Light!

Not bad. It manages to convey the sense of the classic design while avoiding the awkward question of why the power source for an ancient alien civilization at the center of the galaxy would look like a 1930s railway porter's lantern.

I really like it for the reasons you cited. I think it is a good compromise between what the fans are familiar with, a 1930s railway porter's lantern, and something of alien origin.

Re: Green Lantern's Light!

I don't know...I'm not thrilled about the strange, alien design changes. I believe there has to be a balance between being "realistic" and keeping it where people can relate to it. For instance, I think the sharp points on Ryan Reynold's mask come closer to making him look evil than anything else.

Anyway, just my thought; and it will probably change once I see the movie. In all of the pre-press stuff, I couldn't stand the puffy-paint webs on Sam Raimi's Spider-man costume, and I wondered what the heck they were thinking. As it turns out, the costume didn't detract as much as I thought it would, and the movie was obviously a colossal success.

Re: Green Lantern's Light!

I always figured Peter sprayed some of his actual webbing on the outside of the costume. Faster, easier, cheaper than coming up with a complex silkscreen design or something. The costume would be pretty complex already.

Re: Green Lantern's Light!

I agree with Christopher too and like the alien design. Always kind of bugged me that the human Green Lantern's who used a alien power battery that didn't actually look alien. I like the organic type design as well. This movie is going to be awesome.

Re: Green Lantern's Light!

Visually they are veering off the original quite a bit.. the colors are there but the design is radically different.

Personally i'm not a fan of the DCU so i'm not offended but i can imagine the shitstorms on Green Lantern message boards and cries of childhood raping and suckass design

Fanboys can be quite amusing sometimes..

Re: Green Lantern's Light!

Honestly, a lot of the design work for the GL movies seems to focus on how it will look in motion, so I am going to wait for that before I make any kind of final judgement.

However, the look doesn't look bad now in still form.

Re: Green Lantern's Light!

A lot of the design work remember is geared towards 3D. So when we see the Lantern it will most likely be in 3D along with the hardlight projection.

Re: Green Lantern's Light!

It's definitely a cool design, and nicely toes the line between the traditional look and a more alien asthetic. The only thing that confuses me is that it doesn't look much like the GL emblem. You'd think the designers would've made sure that their final design could still be abstracted into the emblem of the GL Corps.

Re: Green Lantern's Light!

I really don't think it's that much of a departure from what's already been established. The essence of the design is still there, it's just been translated into film, just like the costumes and other equally iconic design elements in the Batman or Superman films were.

Nolan's Batsuit and car doesn't look much like the comic book version or any previous film versions for that matter, but there's no mistaking them for anything else.

Re: Green Lantern's Light!

I'm fine with it, but if the characters were the "Green Axe Corps" we would still expect something shaped like an axe because the form is decided by the function.

I could quite imagine that most if not all alien civilizations that had night and needed light would at some point in their technological development have a device that functioned like a lantern. Not all of them had hands and so not all of them needed handles, but it wouldn't strike me odd that most humanoid species with hands and eyes would have a lantern that looked like a lantern.

But as said, I'm fine with it, and the object actual pretty much fulfills what I just wrote.

Re: Green Lantern's Light!

I always liked the idea of the lanterns being custom made to reflect the user. See how Hal Jordan's lantern differs from Kyle Rayner's. Both lanterns have a different motif but they are still power batteries. This could account for how a human lantern looks like its based off old school earth technology.

I feel the opposite. I think the individual designs for the various GLs has gotten a bit out of hand in the comics. The Green Lantern Corps is a military/police force, so uniform should be operative word on costuming. The variations in anatomy of the different alien races should provide plenty of variety.

Re: Green Lantern's Light!

^ You must love Alan Scott then. ;)

(yes, I know he's not officially in the Corps)

Lanterns convergently evolve. :shifty:

 Well, Alan's a special case. But I do love him. How can you not love a character named Green Lantern whose costume features so much red and purple? :techman:

Re: Green Lantern's Light!

Take some getting used too. I was holding out hope for the classic design; at least for the Earth lantern.
