I have never read any of them.

1. What is your opinion?
2 Does it work withe the current relanch series or are they separate storylines?
3. Is the ship Galaxy or Ambassador class?

1) Awesome. Others' opinions will differ, though. It's definitely...unconventional.
2) Mostly separate, but it's crossed over with the main continuity a few times. Not necessary, but definitely compatible.
3) Starts Ambassador, is destroyed, and the next one is Galaxy.

I've read 'em all. And i think they are indeed very good books. However its my understanding that the New Frontier series kinda runs its own show. I loved Treason and i cant wait until Blind Man's Bluff decides to arrive.

I liked the first few books, but the quality has kinda varied after that. Not bad, on average.

'New Frontier' is set off in a sector of space where the cast are the only major Federation presence. However the book DOES cross over somewhat when needed.

I'm not really certain what you mean by do they work with the relaunch.

I only read the original four novella series when they came out about thirteen years ago. I remember there was something a little different about them, though I couldn't put my finger on exactly what that was and it wasn't a bad thing. I really enjoyed them. I have recently picked up the entire series as ebooks, including all the mini-series and cross-overs. I'm not really certain why I've waited so long and am really anxious to get started. I'll probably start with the original four again and just read straight through. It should get me well into next year!

As far as fitting in with the other series, yes, I think they do. The sort of had their own continuous on-going story. Over the years there've even been cross-overs between New Frontier and other Trek series and other series have mentioned characters and events from the New Frontier series. There was even a couple of New Frontier novellas in the last two Mirror Universe anthologies.

Having not read past the initial start-up, I can't say for certain what all happens but if memory serves me, I believe the original Excalibur was an Ambassador class, it gets destroyed at some point in the series and then the crew gets a newer, suped up Galaxy-class.

Pick them up and give them a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I hope this helps some.

What I mean about connecting with the relaunch is, there isn't glaring differences like the Shatner books where things just don't make sense?

PAD is notorious for explaining glitches in future books, ie genders of ships' captains (they were siblings, of course), incorrect but canonical rank insignias, a vanishing couch, etc. So any "glaring difference" is eventually repaired.

"New Frontier" is a sometimes-comedic, science fiction soap opera. Love it!

It started strong. Was a favorite series for a number of years but lately it's gotten tiresome and I've finally given up on it. Read up to Gods Above or Stone and Anvil but it tends to go off the rails after that.

I'm actually planning on starring New Frontier immenently. I've heard some weird stuff about it, but I like my Trek a little crazy.

I notice the first book has Ambassador Spock in it. Did he spend any time on Romulus?

And I don't care about the odd continuity glitch - I cram most of the books into the same continuity whether they like it or not;).

This. The early stuff is great, and Stone and Anvil remains one of my favorite works of TrekLit (the ending is just flat-out beautiful), but after that the series fell flat for me (haven't read- but plan to- Treason yet). I love New Frontier overall though, and it's a lot of fun if you don't take the continuity stuff too seriously.

Most probably, everything you've read about it is true. It's different. It's crazy. It's over-the-top. It's a comic-book. The characters are ridiculous. The adventures are preposterous. All true. And I love it! :D

More seriously, it's a Star Trek series with a comic-book feel (over-the-top characters, somehow-cheesy dialogues, galaxy-spanning adventures, etc). It might not be your cup of tea, but I would give it a try. I like it very much, even if recently it has somewhat lost its freshness.

Stone and Anvil, and Once Burned, are absolutely two of the best Trek books ever.

I pretty much agree with what everyone else here has said. It starts out awesome, but the quality does kinda rise and fall after they destroy the Excalibur. ( I loved Stone and Anvil, the Beings books and the first two Excalibur books, didn't like either Restoration or Cold Wars, and I think After the Fall, Missing in Action and Treason are ok.) It used to be one of my favorite series, but it was quickly overtaken by Titan, the DS9 R, and Vanguard.

it's more like TOS than any other Trek series. just with more sex and violence.

take a look at my user name and be shocked, shocked, that i LOVE it.

Confession: One of the main reasons I'm gonna read it is for the return of Mister Arex, one of my all-time favourite Trek characters.

Then you're not gonna like one of the books. If I remember correctly some jerk
Cut's his arm off.

I love them...It's definitely gotten slow now but I'm officially invested in the awesome characters.

I still can't believe how brutal Treason was. Some of the stuff in the book, including that, was just vicious. It kinda makes me wonder if he's getting ready to either end the series, or bring about some major changes.
