New Frontier Excalibur crew Question

I am currently reading Dark Allies in the New Frontier series. I am confuse as to why Katerina Mueller is referred to as the "Executive Officer". Shouldn't Shelby have that title? I always though the XO was for the 2nd in command.

Never Mind. The very next paragraph explained it.

The New Frontier executive officer/first officer split was first introduced in The Captain's Table: Once Burned, for what it's worth.

It did sort of make sense that the night shift had a senior officer in charge. After all, there would be no "night" in space, or it is all night with no day. Enterprise wouldn't just face problems 9 to 5.

I think Robot Chicken got it right:

Makes more sense than Voyager having Harry Kim in charge of the night shift. When is he supposed to sleep?

Was that Patrick Stewart as Picard? It sure sounded like him, and I know he has done parody stuff like this before.

My best guess would be that Voyager had a four shift schedule, so he had his main bridge shift, the night shift, a recreation period, and a sleep period.
