New Discovery rumor: cbs in-house fx team dissolved

This is currently a rumor coming from within the industry and yet to be corroborated.

Treknews and trekmovie.com have now picked up the rumor story. Interesting to see where this goes.

Link? Or anything? Where did this rumor originate?

If true, I'm sure CBS is farming out the FX work to outside houses. They may have been doing so already; did we know if they were even using CBS-D for Discovery?

I just checked both sites and don't see anything in the news sections regarding this rumor - where are they talking about it?

The in-house team might only have been involved in all the pre-production rendering and prelay. If their sending the work to another company now the series is filming, it could mean they're about to start the full CGI post production.

Or, they want an excuse to farm it out to the lowest bidder. Not good either way.

Funny thing is, the point of an in-house VFX crew is to reduce overhead and therefore costs. You're not paying for the expenses and profit margins of a whole seperate company, just salaries and expenses for employees of yours. It's why nuBSG went to an in-house crew during season 2.

That said, there may be other factors at work here. I can speak from experience that when the DS9 Blu-ray was still a possibility, CBS reached out to the company I work for to redo the CGI in seasons five through seven, despite the CBS-D crew still being around at that time. It's possible that CBS feels that their in-house team doesn't or didn't have the experience or capacity to handle some aspect of Discovery's FX.

Well, making this kind of change early in production isn't going to create a crisis.

That's it. I'm officially done with Discovery. If they're just gonna farm off the fx to some 12 year olds in Thailand then obviously the show sucks. Thank you for ruining my childhood! I hope you're happy CBS. Don't you dare try to make a competent TV show on my watch!!

This is just another sign of gross mismanagement within the upper-echelon. Not a good sign at all.

Possible reason for the delay and the unusual long production schedule? Or this will add up to even more delays?

CBS the same place that ripped up the community boards because they weren't worth maintaining.
