New comer looking for ideas for ST books to read

azzurri08

Not having read a lot of ST books I was wondering if I could get some suggestions? I really liked ENT and DS9 the best so stories related to those would peak my interest most, but all others would also. With your suggestion can you please give a little info about what the story is about. Thanks

ENT and DS9 eh? That's easy.

ENT: The Good that Men Do (Set after/during the last episode).

DS9:
(set after the series ended)
The DS9 Relaunch
Millennium Trilogy by J&G Reeves Stevens

(Set during the series)
Fallen Heroes by Dafydd ab Hugh
Hollow Men by Una McCormack
The 34th Rule by David R. George III and Armin Shimerman

In both cases, Pocket has done books that continue after the series. With Enterprise, there is just one book so far: The Good that Men Do by Andy Mangels & Michael A. Martin, with a followup book called Kobayashi Maru by the same authors due next year.

For DS9, the post-finale fiction has gone on for, er, a while. It started in 2001, and has continued full bore since. Here's a list of all the books.

Avatar Book 1 by S.D. Perry
Avatar Book 2 by S.D. Perry
Section 31: Abyss by David Weddle & Jeffrey Lang
Gateways: Demons of Air and Darkness by Keith R.A. DeCandido
"Horn and Ivory" by Keith R.A. DeCandido (in Gateways: What Lay Beyond)

The above five were collected in 2007 into a single trade paperback entitled Twist of Faith.

Mission: Gamma
---Book 1: Twilight by David R. George III
---Book 2: This Gray Spirit by Heather Jarman
---Book 3: Cathedral by Michael A. Martin & Andy Mangels
---Book 4: Lesser Evil by Robert Simpson

The first two books will be collected into a single trade paperback These Haunted Seas in 2008.

Rising Son by S.D. Perry
The Left Hand of Destiny Book 1 by J.G. Hertzler & Jeffrey Lang
The Left Hand of Destiny Book 2 by J.G. Hertzler & Jeffrey Lang
Unity by S.D. Perry

Worlds of DS9 Book 1
---Cardassia: The Lotus Flower by Una McCormack
---Andor: Paradigm by Heather Jarman
Worlds of DS9 Book 2
---Trill: Unjoined by Andy Mangels & Michael A. Martin
---Bajor: Fragments & Omens by J. Noah Kym
Worlds of DS9 Book 3
---Ferenginar: Satisfaction is Not Guaranteed by Keith R.A. DeCandido
---The Dominion: Olympus Descending by David R. George III

Warpath by David Mack
Fearful Symmetry by Olivia Woods (coming in 2008)

Also recommended are a couple of "previews":
A Stitch in Time by Andrew J. Robinson
The Lives of Dax, ed. by Marco Palmieri

That should keep you busy for a while. :D

Thanks Guys this is really helpful. If there are any other ST books that are not ENT or DS9 but are really very good books please continue to let me know. Thanks again.

Two of the best, both by Keith R. A. DeCandido, are Diplomatic Implausibility and Articles of the Federation.

You don't have to have a lot of Trek knowledge when reading them, but if you do have, then you'll appreciate them a lot more.

DI is about Worf's first diplomatic mission after leaving DS9. Since DS9 is one of your faves, that may help in your decision to buy this excellent book and give it a read. It's one of the best-written books published in the last decade.

Any of the Lost Era books is worth a read if you are interested in that character, society, or time period. In particular, Serpents Among the Ruins, The Art of the Impossible, and The Buried Age are fantastic books.

and don't be afraid to try non-TV based stuff.

there's New Frontier which is at 18 books and an anthology and deals with a post-Cold War plot about a fallen empire and a ship trying to help out.

IKS Gorkon is set aboard the eponymous Klingon vessel and includes appearances from Worf, Martok and some DS9 guest Klingons. the series is being rebranded as 'Klingon Empire' from February. there's 3 books under the Gorkon title.

SCE or 'Corps of Engineers' is a series of e-books, also available in print form following a team of engineers. don't be put off, it's one of the best series and probably the closest to a TV series. There's 7 mass-market paperback size volumes and 2, soon 3, trade-sized.

Vanguard is a 23rd century-set series on a space-station. it's kinda like a TOS version of DS9 but not. there's 3 books so far.

there's also Titan, a series following Riker's new ship on its mission of exploration. there's 3 volumes, with a 4th available in the US and Canada, coming soon in GB.

I need to emphasize the recommendation for A Stitch In Time. It's Garak's autobiography.

Some non-Ent/DS9 books that I feel are particularly good and deserve special mention are:

Vanguard Series (3 books so far)
Voyager: Captains' Table: Fire Ship
TNG: Section 31: Rogue
Voyager: Echoes
Voyager: Nanotech War
Tales of The Dominion War
Articles of the Federation
The last three A Time To books (Kill, Heal, and War/Peace).
really any that have the author "David Mack" are a must read IMO.

Oh and another DS9 book that is excellent:
Prophecy and Change

If you are really wanting to get into Trek lit, then you should check out Memory Beta, the non-canon Star Trek wiki. IMO it is one of, if not the, best Trek Lit resource on the 'net.

As for recommendations some of my favorites are
DS9 Relaunch

The A Time To... series, a TNG miniseries which covers the year leading up to Nemisis. I didn't like the first one, but the third through ninth are all really good.
Articles of the Federation, which follows up on one of the storylines from the last three A Time To... books.

the Vanguard series

the Titan series

theNew Frontier series

The Sundered, which deal with Sulu and the Excelsior, the Tholians, and a new race they encounter.

Serpents Among the Ruins, an Harriman/Enterprise B story about Tomed Incident, which was reffered to in the TNG episode the "Neutral Zone".

The Art of the Impossible, which deals with the Betreka Nebula Incident, which was reffered to in DS9 episode "The Way of the Warrior).

The Barried Age, which follows Picard during his time between the Stargazer and the Ent-D.

TheMirror Universe series, which tells stories about the MU counterparts of the characters from most of the series. We've gotten stories for each of the TV series, but so far NF is the only Lit series to get a story.

I know that's a long list, but I tried as hard as I can and I cannot narrow it down any more, only add to it.

Again thanks for all the help. Last night I already bought ENT: the good that men do, last full measure, and articles of the federation. I will be looking into most of the others you guys have mentioned. Feel free to continue posting if you like as I will keep reading. Thanks again!

Be sure to let us know what you think.

FYI: A bunch of the authors actually post here, in fact one of the authors of TGTMD and LFM, and the author of AotF are ones that do.

It might be a little while before I can get through a lot of these books but I'll definatley try and post what I thought. The authors that post here,do they go by their name, or do they go different screen names? In case I ever have a question or comment? Thanks

Most of them go by name, except for some of the authors who were posting here before they started writing.

And there's this hack writer (responsible for the hugely hilarious Articles of the Federation) who has a lot of long names so he just goes by his initials, KRAD. The other authors actually use real names. Exceptions include garamet (Margaret Wander Bonanno) and RedJack (Geoffrey Thorne).

KRAD compensates by using his full name as his premium title. Other authors include their websites or latest work in their signatures (Christopher and Worf2DS9[/b] come to mind).
