This may or may not be relevant- but I find it interesting.

Just after World War II, the market share for the Coca-Cola Company's flagship beverage was 60%, and in 1983 it had shrunk to under 24% in the face of competition from Pepsi-Cola. Pepsi had begun to outsell Coke in supermarkets; Coke maintained its edge only through fountain sales.[citation needed]
Market analysts believed baby boomers were likely to purchase more diet drinks as they aged and remained health- and weight-conscious. Therefore, any future growth in the full-calorie segment had to come from younger drinkers, who at that time favored Pepsi and its sweetness by even more overwhelming margins than the market as a whole.

So they made New Coke

The results of that were strong — the high fructose corn syrup mixture overwhelmingly beat both regular Coke and Pepsi. Then tasters were asked if they would buy and drink it if it were Coca-Cola. Most said yes, they would, although it would take some getting used to. A small minority, about 10-12%, felt angry and alienated at the very thought, saying that they might stop drinking Coke altogether. Their presence in focus groups tended to skew results in a more negative direction as they exerted indirect peer pressure on other participants.

Of course...

Despite New Coke's acceptance with a large number of Coca-Cola drinkers, a vocal minority of them resented the change in formula and were not shy about making that known — again just as had happened in the focus groups.[21]
Many of these drinkers were Southerners, some of whom considered the drink a fundamental part of regional identity. They viewed the company's decision to change the formula through the prism of the Civil War, as another surrender to the "Yankees"[21] (although Pepsi was invented in New Bern, North Carolina, PepsiCo has located its headquarters in New York State since its 1965 establishment[22]).

It Failed...

Coca-Cola executives announced the return of the original formula on July 10, less than three months after New Coke's introduction. ABC News' Peter Jennings interrupted regular programming to share the news with viewers. On the floor of the U.S. Senate, David Pryor called the reintroduction "a meaningful moment in U.S. history".[35]

Or did it?

By the end of the year, Coke Classic was substantially outselling both New Coke and Pepsi, putting the company back into the number-one position it has enjoyed ever since. Six months after the rollout, Coke's sales had increased at more than twice the rate of Pepsi's.[39]

In case you haven't guessed it, i'm referring to 'Enterprise', which many trekkies considered a mockery of star trek, and the launch of the new movie 'Star Trek'.

So your saying Trek XI is a good thing then, right?

That's a very strong analogy. In a similar vein, once a boy whose favorite toy was a cowboy named Woody received a new toy: an astronaut named Buzz Lightyear. Over time the boy came to appreciate and love both toys.

A Big budget Star trek movie - of course its a good thing, only 10 movies late! (But of course, I have to see it before I can say its good).

I'm just saying the strategy of making a crappy product, realising it, and reverting to what the fans want has paid off... looking at the trailers No. 1 is gay, but No. 2 is far more fan friendly.

True, but the few episodes i did see before giving up on enterprise, i saw huge 3+ episode plots (Not trek imo), and emotional Vulcans. Oh, and i didn't actually see any exploration just the Andorians.

What do emotional Vulcans, huge 3+ episode plots, Andorians, and no exploration have to do with Coca-Cola... or toys?

So, TOS is original Coke. ENT is New Coke. ST09 is Classic Coke. Does that make TNG Diet Coke, DS9 Cherry Coke, and VOY Caffeine Free Coke? :)

The thing is, when old Coke was rebooted as Classic Coke (or not long after), they stopped using sugar (or sucrose) as the sweetner and switched to high fructose corn syrup. So since 1985, Classic Coke may be the same formula, but the sweetener is different. There are plenty of folks who can taste the difference, which is why there's such a rush on the Coke made and sold for the Passover, because it's sweetened the old way, with sucrose. For those of us who remember, it's the "good stuff."

Long story short, just like Classic Coke isn't exactly old Coke, neither is ST09 exactly like TOS.

How's that for stretching an analogy? ;)

Enterprise was NOT New Coke. :wtf:

More like limited edition Diet Coke with Lemon... which comes with a bitter aftertaste. Especially if you were an ardent fan, who hung in there to see it begin to catch on.

Star Trek 2009, Classic Coke my foot.

Hear hear. What part of "Forget everything you know" and "This is not your father's Star Trek" did you not understand?

I thought that using the word "gay" when you actually mean "stupid" was widely considered to be the New Coke of insults.

Actually, it's the classic.

No, VOY is Coke Zero.

Hmmmm... considring that Diet Coke is the New Coke formula without sugar and Coke Zero is the Classic Coke formula without sugar your comparison is also gay.

Initially I thought that what the original poster was getting at was that STXI is New Coke and that they are going to realize you can't mess with the original formula and that they were going to go back and do more movies with Shatner/Nimoy and crew, until I got to the end of his post.
