So, Simon & Schuster's website has just had a big update - listings are now up for the first three Typhon Pact books and Shattered Light (Myriad Universes #3).

And there are three new listings.

One of these is for the next New Frontier book, which was originally announced for Summer this year, but seemed to have been delayed. It now has a listing for January 2011, and has a title - Resolutions. It is down as a trade paperback release.

Back when the ST09 books were cancelled, and removed from the S&S website, there was a listing that was present for a few days, then disappeared. This was for "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Untitled Paperback #1", but didn't have any other details about it. It has now reappeared, along with a listing for a second book in the same series, still without titles, but down for release in November. The first one has an author listed too - Rudy Josephs, who contributed to Shards and Shadows last year. There is also a brief blurb:

A new Starfleet Academy series for teens--filled with romance and adventure!

The listing of the Starfleet Academy books raises two questions for me:

1) Since they are published by a different part of S&S ,Simon Spotlight, will they have (a) different editor(s) like the former YA line?

2) They are listed as Trades, yet have the MMPB price tag (7,99$). So what format are they?

Very cool, thanks for sharing. I wonder why we haven't heard about these SA books before? It seems weird that we've heard about all of the books around them, but not a thing about them.

Same reason the old so-called Young Adult titles and various other Wallaby, Aladdin, Wanderer, Minstrel, Archway and Little Simon books would often pop up seemingly unannounced. Different divisions, aimed at different demographics.

talking of the lost JJ books, Sci-Fi Now mag had an article talking to the four writers and at the end, claimed they're coming out in 2012, can any one confirm?

oh, and CLB, when did you change your name to Charles?

Kind of excited about the Academy books. Some of the TNG ones were truly fantastic - the Worf trilogy, Capture the Flag...

Probably like those old YA books-- as tall as a (small) trade paperback, but obviously much thinner. That's how the Star Wars YA books are formatted, and that's about the same price.

Probably.

At least with about 220 pages they have almost twice the length of the old YA novels, IIRC those had about 120 pages.

Well, at least once the end of October finally hits, there will be lots of awesome books very quickly (typhon pact, myriad universes, new frontier, and I just may check out the YA ones for kicks, too).

Gonna be a long wait from May till then, though.

I wonder if this will be the final New Frontier book? Resolutions kind of has a closing theme sound to it.

Interesting. Looking forward to hearing more.

Resolutions could just be tying up the old story lines before moving on to something new. Maybe a reassignment to a different sector or something.

Man, I'm so behind. I still haven't read "Treason." It's been sitting on my shelf for months!

You and me both. I bought it the month it came out, and I just yesterday finished Stone And Anvil. After that, No Limits, Tales from the Captain's Table, After The Fall, Missing In Action, and the comic all come before Treason. Yeesh.

All right, I'm not that behind!

I do want to re-read all the NF books, though. I can barely remember anything anymore.

That was pretty much my plan, too. Glad I did; I'd totally forgotten some real gems. Stone & Anvil is goddamn incredible, for instance.

I hope this is the case. It would be even cooler if PAD tied things up and then moved Calhoun and co. more into the main 24th century continuity. Excalibur and Trident could be reassigned to Federation space due to the severe loses to the Borg in Destiny, and Shelby could be moved to command or something. But who knows...

Does this sound like "Trek hopping on the Twilight bandwagon" to anyone else?

 On the other hand, if it's a decent read and sells well, more power to it.

I was thinking more like the ST XI bandwagon, since the movie had an Academy focus. And Twilight hardly invented the concept of teen romance fiction; it's just a highly (and inexplicably) successful recent entry in a genre that's been popular for a long time.

And hey, a YA Trek series that's aimed at girls as well as boys? Doesn't sound like a bad thing to me.
