New Atlantis Uniforms

Crewman47

Commodore
Newbie
Just watching the 2nd episode of the 5th season and I just realised that that what they've done with the uniforms is somewhat identical to what they did on TNG season 3 where the main cast and senior officer wore the new uniform but Junior officers and enlisted still wore the old uniform. Is this supposed to be the intention or is it just a coincindence?

^It's probably semi-intentional. Costumes in television shows cost thousands of dollars. The main cast will probably get new uniforms first and the background characters will get them later.

I wish Woolsey's outfit were black, allowing for a white shirt and tie to be worn. He's the leader now, why doesn't he stay in his black suit if he wanted to?

Can someone with photoshop colorize one of those pre-season publicity photos he's in, and see what he'd looks like? (there was a thread in Gen Trek a couple of months ago, where someone blackened the TOS & ENT uniforms... )

he should just wear a suit.. unless hes goign offworld or exploring the city..

but he seems to just be doing officey stuff...

i think with Atlantis ... SG has become too Sci Fi and forgets its 'contemporary' with nowendays people from Earth

Yeah, there's no reason for Woolsey to wear a uniform all the time. In fact, there's no reason for any of the civilians to wear uniforms.

I assume there's a reason (in the context of the show) why those uniforms exist? Why don't the civilians just wear civilian garb, and the military members wear their existing service uniforms?

I suppose at the start they had uniforms because they where going to be cut off from earth so guess they just took a lot of the same clothes just in different sizes.

Yeah, that Star Trek like uniforms threw me when I first saw the Atlantis preview pics back before season one. I guess they made them because the Atlantis Expedition is multinational as opposed to US based. Maybe they wanted something unifying. The change in the uniform in season 4 seemed really sudden for a change and made it seem even more Star Trek.

Why not military members were respective countries uniforms such as french american brith russian? Can save money by getting stock goods :)

They do, to an extent. In the first season, on at least one occaision during one field mission Ford switched to US-standard digital camo fatigues. Here's a quick rundown of the USUAL uniform assignments:

Season One:

-Civilians wear beige uniforms, with blue panels (science), green panels (engineering/technician) or yellow panels (medical)
-Military wear light grey uniforms, and black panels
-Civilian leaders wear light grey uniforms with red panels (Weir, Teyla)
-Weir got a thinner, more form-fitting grey jacket halfway through the season

Season Two:

-The military guys got darker grey uniforms. Select nonmilitary guys got them too (McKay, Beckett, Zelenka, etc.) though they didn't always wear the coloured panels with them.
-Weir got sick of her jacket in this season and started wearing off-the-shelf tops and jackets from Lulu Lemon. :P She would still wear her old jacket for official stuff and field duty.

Season Three:

-Sheppard got a cool aviator jacket, and eventually phased out his gray uniform in favor of the standard black BDUs that the people at the SGC wore. He's the ONLY military guy to do so; everyone else on Atlantis continued with the grey/dark grey uniforms, notably Major Lorne.
-McKay likewise phased out his uniform for the usual blue BDUs seen on SG-1. Rumour has it that the actors hated the outfits and in the abscence of new ones, just started raiding the SG-1 warddrobe as that show was wrapping up.

Season Four:

-McKay, Teyla, Keller, Carter and Zelenka get cool new outfits with the panels replaced by striping.
-Sheppard maintains his black BDUs. All other militaries stay the same.
-The field uniforms for Sheppard, Teyla and McKay are replaced by black field uniforms pretty much like the ones used in SG-1

Season Five:

-Woolsey wears a new-style uniform, but in a lighter shade of grey than everyone else
-McKay and Teyla start wearing the same cool leather jackets occasionally in the field, most notably during the episodes films in the colder and wetter Vancouver winter. ;)

Whew!

^^McKay actually started wearing his darker uniform towards the end of season 1. I know he was definately wearing one in The Defiant One.
