New animated "Justice League" project from Timm and Burnett

“Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles” will launch in the spring of 2015.

“Chronicles” is said to revolve around a newly conceived reality in the DC universe where Justice League members Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are much darker versions of the superheroes that people know.

The digital series is based on “Justice League: Gods & Monsters,” an original animated film executive produced by Bruce Timm and co-produced by Alan Burnett that will be released by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment later in 2015. Timm and Burnett both collaborated on “Batman: The Animated Series.”

I trust Timm and Burnett, but the "darker versions" thing gives me pause.

When asked at a talk about what they would love to do that they hadn't yet, they replied that doing, basically, an R rated version with these characters is a goal both have had in mind for a long time, so this looks like it's getting closer to reality and what they really want to do.
 
they already covered this in the "Justice League" two-parter episode A Better World, where they meet their darker counterparts, the Justice Lords.
 
I have no problem with darker and edgier (I loved MOS after all), but frankly I haven't enjoyed the darker DC animated movies nearly as much as the earlier, more optimistic stuff (New Frontier, GL: First Flight, All Star Superman, etc). In fact most of them I end up giving up on half way through.

The thought of an entire series done in that style, even if made by Bruce Timm, doesn't really excite me much at all. Even if it is just an online digital thing.
 
I really like bruce Timm's work, but there is more than enough "dark" DC stuff. Still, I'll give it a chance, like I do with all DC animation. With Bruce Timm working on it, it could be great, and hopefully it will be something worth watching.
 
Sounds like most are in the same boat of hoping their trust in Timm pays off. I know that's the only reason I'm going to tune in
 
I'm with the most of you guys here. I like Timm's DC stuff, but I'm not quite sure what to make of the "darker" element. Just how dark are we talking here, because these character have gone pretty dark alredy.

According to this story on IGN, it's only going to be three episodes, leading into a movie. So it's not like this is going to be going on for dozens of episodes.
 
Good Grief, will the 80s never end? Just the word "dark" is enough to induce narcolepsy at this point.

Although I agree that Bruce Timm's involvement is encouraging.
 
1. This is advertising. A freebie that forces you to buy the movie because you want more. We are helping them trick us into giving them money. It's no different than someone making you dig your own grave.

2. Dvd extras. The movie was running an hour too long. They cut off the hour and turned it into 3 x 20 minute digital downloads.

3. This means that they can sell the movie for a third time as a directors cut with the webisodes spliced into the "original" version of the movie like they did with BSG Razor.

4. Variable ratings. They can sell the actual movie to children, or air it on cable to children, and then confine all the nc17 sex and violence to the DVD extra chronicles which will trick the dirty minded into watching something made for 12 year olds. Yes it's Dark Justice league, but it's still a crtoon about comic book characters, so sure we think it's good, but this is for 12 to 16 year olds who think that they are mature and grown up.

5. It's a test vehicle to see if a complete series of "anything" can be sold digitally to DC's fanbase. If it works, if there is a market, there will be 10 more projects under way within a year. Of course if you look at DC's Movies of late, it hasn't been original material. They are adapting verbatim actual comic books. Logically if this medium is much cheaper with a faster turn around on production than the direct to dvd movies, they can quickly animate and upload every relevant modern comic made in the last 15 years.
 
Like Joss Whedon, Bruce Timm is a name that doesn't insprie me to care enough anymore.

As a writer we got the excellent "Batman: The Animated Series", but then we got the subsequent Batman series with all the changes like poor new character designs and a kid as the new Robin. Then we got a very decent, but comparritively inferior "Superman: The Animated Series". Then we got "Justice League" which was hit and miss and didn't do Batman justice. Then we got all these variations on Batman which, to me, are just a series of misses (to say nothing of the inferior scores; Shirley Walker and crew spoiled me) and plus essentially most of them are just using a character he created.

^I think you skipped over JLU there, which had some of the *best* Batman moments in any medium ever, along with easily the best Superman and Wonder Woman depictions. As far as I can tell, Timm has lost nothing. I just thought he was done with this stuff for now.
 
No, I just consider it the same thing; it was the same show, they just used the ratings gimmick of "Unlimited" to add more superheros.

Interesting I wonder if the new WW is Alan Burnett's idea. He did use the comic book character in a Superman Batman arc he did with Nguyen
