Netflix TV show recommendations

I got Netflix last month and I've been using it a lot, finding new stuff and catching up with other things. But, I've kind of hit a wall. I wanted to try to find a new show to go with after I recently finished season 1 of The Blacklist (which is awesome), but its been hard. I could watch some older shows I know well like the various star Trek series, but I've been having the urge for a newer (newer meaning in the 2000s+), somewhat serialized show, and I just can't seem to find anything that clicks with me since I randomly tried The Blacklist a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it.

Since there are so many shows available on netflix, I'm curious if anyone has any recommendations for shows I haven't heard of or haven't considered. For reference, here's a short list of current and completed shows I like, to give an example into the kinds of shows I like:

Flash
Arrow
The Blacklist
House
Agents of SHIELD
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Scrubs
MASH
Star Trek (duh)
Warehouse 13
Eureka
Stargate SG-1
Doctor Who
Buffy

Recommendations can be for any genre (which is why I posted here, I'm definitely not just looking for Sci Fi and Fantasy recommendations). The only "requirement" is that I'm looking for something a bit serialized. I'm fine with episodic stuff in a show, but I like when shows have some kind of story arc that goes throughout a season/series. Well, actually, there is another requirement (since this is Netflix we're talking about). No nudity, period. I doubt that would come up in a recommendation anyway, but after getting shocked when I clicked on Orange is the New Black a few days ago, I figure I should mention it.

For the record, a list of some shows I've tried on Netflix recently but couldn't get into:

Chuck
Fringe
Luthor
Breaking Bad (I bailed after a few minutes of the pilot, the hammy acting just threw me off)
Orange is the New Black (I got 30 seconds into this and then: random nudity. This is when I learned I should google a show before clicking on it in Netflix )

I spent about 40 minutes today just browsing Netflix, lost among the choices, so any recommendations would be helpful.

If Scrubs wasn't too goofy and Buffy not too high school for you, you may enjoy Glee, which is both high school-set and ranges the gamut from "pretty goofy" to "goofiest show ever". It definitely goes off the rails after the first few seasons, in a way many dig and even more don't, but its first 2-3 seasons are pretty strong, and very serialized.

It took me over a year between watching the pilot and the rest of Breaking Bad, but it's worth it, even if it is a little rough at the edges in the beginning.

Parks and Recreation is my go-to recommendation. 30 Rock is good, too. You'll like 30 Rock if you liked Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

I'd thought about 30 Rock, but I've never found Tiny Fey funny (she coincidentally played one of the worst guest characters on Kimmy Schmidt), so I've never tried it. I've heard of Parks & Recreation, but its one of those shows that just flew under the radar to me. It looks like it could have potential though, so I'll probably try it out, and maybe give 30 Rock a chance, too.

I'm not much into musicals or huge teen drama (Buffy was different than most shows that start in high school because of the supernatural elements and Joss Whedon's style).

Here are some of the better tv shows on Netflix right now (in alphabetical order and excluding the shows you have already listed):

Continuum
Daredevil
Farscape
Firefly
Frasier
House of Cards (U.S. and UK versions)
Justice League
Justice League Unlimited
Mad Men
Malcom in the Middle
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
NCIS
Numb3rs
One Tree Hill
Political Animals
Quantum Leap
Sherlock
Supernatural
The 4400
The Guild
The Originals
The West Wing
The Wonder Years
Video Game High School

I rewatched the pilot of Breaking Bad years later, and there was this boring talky talky scene I didn't think much first time around, where Walt and Skylar were in bed and... WHAT THE HELL IS SHE DOING WITH HER HAND!!???

Ok, from this list I bolded the stuff I've seen before and liked. A few of the others are interesting, although some I've already rejected. I don't like political drama, so no West Wing, Political Animals or House of cards. One Tree Hill's rejection I don't think even needs an explanation, same with My Little Pony. I got spoiled on Quantum Leap's ending, and I'm not going to waste time watching it when it ends on such a horrible note. Mad Men is disgusting, misogynistic trash that I wouldn't make my worst enemy watch, so that's out. NCIS I've seen a bit of before and I already know I don't like.

The Originals is a spin off of a Twilight clone TV show that I obviously don't watch, so that's out. Wonder Years as a show never appealed to me. Video Game High School is a bit below my demographic, I don't generally watch live action kids shows, just cartoons. Supernatural might be interesting, but it would take me about a decade to get through what seems like a million episodes. The Guild is a stupid nerd comedy show, and I'm generally not a fan of shows making fun of nerds (that's why Chuck got dropped after one episode, mocking nerds constantly tends to irritate me, although admittedly I still watch The Big bang theory). So, after all that, the trimmed list comes to

Continuum
Numb3rs
The 4400

They seem moderately interesting, I'll add them to my list of stuff to try.

Breaking Bad (I bailed after a few minutes of the pilot, the hammy acting just threw me off)
Give it another shot. BB is one of the best shows of the past decade.

Eh, maybe some day. Between the horrible writing of the first few minutes and the fact that I can't stand super slow shows (which everything I've read online says BB is), I'm pretty sure Breaking Bad isn't for me. I'm sure its not bad, but it doesn't seem to be for someone like me.

I would not have thought I'd liked political dramas, but The West Wing is just damned good television. Of course, it's opened up a can of worms in that I'm now watching (and enjoying!) House of Cards (U.S.) and planning on watching Boss next.

If you liked Young Justice and Justice League/Justice League Unlimited, I think you'd like Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Like Justice League it starts off decent, but gets better as the show goes on. Don't confuse it with Avengers: Assemble, though, which, in my opinion is a lesser show.

When it comes to Netflix originals - watch Bloodline. That is a fantastic series with some of the best acting I have seen on television. Realistic and thought provoking, plus you get some great shots of the real Florida Keys lifestyle.

I guess I should have made my list biggest. I love Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. I have the show on DVD. Easily the best Marvel animated show. It sucks that they cancelled it to replace it with Avengers Assembled, which is pretty bad. I also enjoyed Wolverine and the X-Men, which I thought should have gone longer.

As for political shows, I just don't like the whole subject when it comes to watching a show. Its taking some of the worst people around (politicians) and putting them on a screen for 45 minutes. Even with fake politicians that is just a recipe for annoying me or putting me to sleep.

Looking on wikipedia, this seems a bit too drama/soap opera-y for me. A "family with dark secrets" is way too dramatic for my tastes, at least when its not a genre show or something.

So, after all that, the trimmed list comes to

Continuum
Numb3rs
The 4400

They seem moderately interesting, I'll add them to my list of stuff to try.

Good luck. I hope you like them.

FYI: For Continuum, there will be a season four concluding arc of 6 episodes that will air starting in September, and The 4400 has a couple books that help somewhat wrap-up/extend the plot-lines of the show.

I agree with you regarding Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Avengers: Assemble. I forgot to include those in my list. FYI: Avengers: Assemble is still airing new episodes on tv.

Well, I tried a couple of shows. Parks and recreation's first episode was horrible. I then read online that the first season is generally diliked, but the last episode of the season is good and picks up from there. So, I watched episode 6 (the last episode of season 1) and it was ok, I even chuckled a bit. Then I got to season 2 episode 1, and it was pretty bad, so I think I can safely say that Parks and Recreation isn't for me.

I also tried Continuum. Its future was really stupid. Oh no, corporations have taken over the world! That certainly seems plausible  The main character, a woman who time travels by accident trying to catch some criminals, is bland. She's basically a minion of the dictatorship trying to get back some criminals who killed some of the evil corporation people. I mean, the show makes sure to eliminate any sympathy for the criminals by saying that their attack on the evil corporate people also killed a bunch of civilians, but that just means there is no one to cheer for. I don't want the terrorists to escape, but I don't want the minion of the dictatorship to succeed, either. I don't think I'll be continuing with this show.

Here are the shows on my own Netflix listed that haven't been listed so far. These may or may not fit your tastes, and a couple of them I have yet to try out myself.

Turn
American Horror Story
Lost
The Bletchley Circle
Arrested Development
Marco Polo
The Tomorrow People
Twin Peaks
X-Files
Hemlock Grove
Murder, She Wrote
Murdoch Mysteries

The Tomorrow People
Is that the newest series? If so, there are a couple of episodes in which one of the original '70s series actors guest stars (Nicholas Young). No, he doesn't reprise his same role (since it was nearly 40 years ago!).

My own Netflix viewing includes The 100, Downton Abbey reruns, and there are a couple of newer series I'm going to try out.

Canadian Netflix has pretty slim choices in comparison to the U.S. site. :(

Well, one last attempt to convince you, I guess: The West Wing is pretty much an idealized version of politicians. There's less underhanded maneuvers and more people fighting for the greater good. Now, House of Cards, on the other hand, I won't even try to convince you to watch, since it's taking some of the worst people around and showing how they're even worse than you'd suspect.

Try episodes 7 and 8 of season 2, which I think are a good representation of how good the show would get. As far as the show improving toward the end of the season, it's really the last two episodes of season 2 that the show improves, as it adds two great characters and ditches the weakest link character from the first two seasons.

Yeah, I tried the first episode or two, but it didn't grab me. I've heard the quality has its ups and downs, though. I'll stick to firefly and Star Trek (and my Babylon 5 DVDs) re-watches when I want sci-fi.

Turn
American Horror Story
Lost
The Bletchley Circle
Arrested Development
Marco Polo
The Tomorrow People
Twin Peaks
X-Files
Hemlock Grove
Murder, She Wrote
Murdoch Mysteries

Going through these, I've already tried America Horror story, and loathed it. I watched the first season of Lost a long time ago and thought it was ok, but I know enough about the rest of it to know I won't like it once it stops being a mostly serious trapped on an island show. I HATE conspiracy theory stuff, which is why I've never bothered with X-Files. I watched the first episode of Twin Peaks a long time ago and was bored to tears. The Tomorrow People is too angsty CW for me, and I watched Smallville

I hated the episode of Arrested Development that I saw a while ago, so that's out. Murder she Wrote, The Bletchley Circle and Murdoch Mysteries are definitely shows I'm not in the demographic for. Hemlock Grove and Marco Polo have nudity, so that's an automatic disqualification (plus my dad already watched Marco Polo and said it was pretty mediocre story wise).

So, that leaves Turn, which actually looks kind of interesting. I'll add it to the list.

I'm just not into political stuff even when the characters doing it aren't horrible. Government/political stuff is always the worst element of any show that has it, so I'm pretty sure I'd lose my mind watching a show that is all about it.

I don't think the main woman is very good (that singing at the beginning of season 2 episode 1 was both unfunny and cringe inducing), and I don't see her getting any better, but I might try doing what you suggested.

West Wing and Breaking Bad are some of the best shows in recent decades. You have very unique taste.

Grace and Frankie is the newest of the Netflix shows, amazing cast and a load of fun.***************************

Well, everyone likes different things. We basically all have our own unique taste. Mine just didn't happen to match those shows

Don't need to defend your views to me. 7th Heaven was on the air, what 10-11 years. Only those people need to defend themselves.
