Netflix prepping Punisher spinoff

Netflix is eyeing yet another Marvel series, as the streaming giant is prepping to spin off Jon Bernthal’s “Daredevil” vigilante Punisher for a series of his own.

Though Bernthal’s character, also known as Frank Castle, has yet to make his debut on the current Netflix series, he will debut in “Daredevil’s” second season, which launches March 18.

Honestly, if this is true, then it just makes me even more excited for Daredevil's second season. If Jon Bernthal has impressed Marvel and Netflix enough to convince them to create a whole new show for the Punisher, then I can't wait to see his performance.

I love The Punisher but I am surprised they are jumping on this so earlier, yeah they must be impressed with Jon Bernthal.

IMO, they're just singing deals and contracts 'just in case'. One of those deals that is based on a lot of what ifs.

Marvel is doing the same with almost every actor they're signing on for the MCU these days, after the RDJ fiasco, where they had to renegotiate a tough deal to get RDJ back for more movies. After that, every new actor/actress had to sign for quite a lot of movies, just in case, with the caviat that Marvel was in no way required to actually use them in that amount of movies. I'm guessing the same thing is going on here, where Bernthal signed on for several shows/seasons, without Marvel actually being forced to star him in those things.

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the Punisher, but I saw this as inevitable, especially after the casting of Bernthal.

I'll watch, of course, but it won't be a binge watch over the first weekend kind of event for me.

Just read that and holy crap.. i was already exited to get a good R rated Punisher (was disappointed that the Ray Stevenson movie flopped, perfect actor for the role but bad movie) but this makes me positively giddy. I also read that they are considering Blade and Ghost Rider for their Phase 2 shows and if they can keep this level established by Daredevil and Jessica Jones it will be one hell of a ride. This is exactly what Marvel needs besides the flashy movies and Shield covering mainstream and the Netflix show to really go dark with adult themes and adult behaviour.

Happy but not surprised. It's the Punisher. He needed his own show from the get-go. He's not a supporting character.

I'd hoped for a Hellcat series as part of Defenders Phase 2 rather than a Punisher one. That said, assuming Phase 2 will be Daredevil 3, Iron Fist 2, Jessica Jones/Luke Cage team-up series (as there's very little Jessica material left that doesn't involve Luke) that still leaves slots for Punisher 1 and Hellcat 1.

If they don't cover his origin in Daredevil, I imagine that they'll do it in flashbacks once he gets his own series.

I can see that being the case. That's likely how they're going to handle Luke Cage's origin in his eponymous series, too.

I had assumed this was inevitable from the moment they first announced The Punisher was going to be on Daredevil. He's just to big of a character to keep as just a supporting character in somebody else's show, especially now that Bernthal is already getting rave reviews before the show is even released.

I have to imagine this means the Punisher will end up being in The Defenders, too. Assuming that's still planned to occur at some point.

I have never really read much Punisher or anything but he seems like a character that would be well suited for the Netflix universe. Doesn't really require a lot of FX, they have the freedom to be as gritty as need be, fits the urban nature of the Netflix TV verse, and seems like a character that could use the serial nature of TV to its advantage.

I was never a big Punisher fan but I like Jon Bernthal. He was good on Walking Dead and he was good in Mob City. I'd be interested in checking out a series with him for sure.

The Punisher is great for a Netflix series. He's kind of the gritty James Bond with the potential for many stories set not just in the U.S. but around the world. The best format for his character would be stories of three to six episodes, with each series released more often than the other series. He doesn't need a permanent supporting cast.
