Netflix is thinking about bringing back cancelled TV shows

I'm all for this. Whereas niche, scifi shows may not survive well on network television, they might thrive on Netflix subscription service where every viewer is recorded and every viewer matters. It would be the equivalent of a cable channel, except online.

I'll be interested in seeing where Netflix heads with this, in addition to the fact that they're currently producing their first, exclusive TV show: House of Cards.

They're big enough to skip the tv networks and produce shows by themselves.
 
I'll watch Firefly if they bring it back. I would love another Farscape movie though or something.
 
It sounds more like they're talking about providing a lifeline for current shows that are facing cancellation, giving them enough extra financial support to save them from cancellation, not resurrecting shows that have been gone for years. I mean, there are major obstacles to achieving the latter, given that the cast and crew have moved on to other projects in the interim. It's unrealistic to think this could bring Firefly or Farscape back to life. Maybe it could be a way to revive something just-cancelled like Stargate Universe. But more likely it'll be for shows that are still around but at risk of cancellation.

Or perhaps as a lower risk investment, a wrap up two hour movie exclusive to netflix instant. Guaranteed audience right there who would swoop in, sign up, and watch if they haven't already.

I have to agree with Christopher on this one.
Just the title 'Saving Cancelled Shows' is indicative of this. Otherwise the headline and article would be about 'Netflix Reviving Cancelled Shows'.

However, if the later is to occur count me in for Firefly.

In the meantime I'm all for V getting a third season.

I wouldn't mind another season of the Blake's Seven if we were really bring shit out of the vault.

We were typing the word Smallville at almost exactly the same time!
 
Smallville likely would have been renewed for an 11th season on the CW if Tom Welling had been willing to stay on. The show ended because Welling wanted it to end.
 
I think it's a neat idea and could be lucrative for Netflix. They would serve as co-producers or co-sponsors of a series, much in the same way that DirecTV has done for Friday Night Lights (a comparison they make in the article). A critically acclaimed series, FNL had low ratings and NBC was ready to cancel it until DirecTV stepped in and made a deal. The show became less of a financial liability to NBC and DirecTV gained first-run air privileges for the series. It was a win-win scenario for both parties.

Netflix could do something very similar. Step in and provide financial backing for a bubble series that's facing the axe. The extra support would save the show and Netflix could gain the rights to stream new episodes early or at the same time as broadcast.
 
Welling's character lives in Metropolis.

It's madness to do a show called Smallville about that guy.

How much of Dallas did we expect to be set in Miami?

Prequel with a 10 year old Clark and Chloe, or a "new focus" in the present day as the world is being introduced to "Superman" who is never seen but only talked about.

Welling has been the worst part of the show for quite a while (Or at least the words he has bee forced to speak.).

He makes me want to hate Superman.
