Nemesis, Reach out and touch

When ever Shinzon was in pain, his Rem buddy would put his hand on him and made him feel all better. They never explained why. I thought that when the DVD came out, there would a deleted scene that would explain that, but there wasn't. Does anyone have an explanation? :shifty:

I assumed it had something to do with he telepathic abilities. Perhaps he is a touch telepath of some sort, given that he laid his hands on Shinzon's head to help him mind rape Troi.

So maybe touching him helps allows the Reman to telepathically calm the pain.

I am pretty sure we have seen Spock do this somewhere, but I can't remember where.

Lt. Ilia and other Deltans could apparently alleviate pain (but not heal the wound) via tactile contact (in TMP).

Shouldn't they have at least explained this? There wasn't any dialogue that indicated telepathic abilities.

You ... didn't think the telepathic-rape stuff was explained enough?
Yes, I got the telepathic rape. The thread is not about telepethy. The question is, why was Viceroy able to take away Shinzon's pain? He wasn't Deltan or Vulcan. I suppose that since the Remans are closely related to the Romulans, who are closely related to the Vulcans, we are just supposed to assume that their telepathic abilities give them the ability to take away pain.

It was pretty self explanatory to me. Considering Picard and co don't see it, and the Romulans know the Remans pretty well, it would have been really bad writing to have a line in there. Having Shinzon mention it would have been too forced.

We haven't seen the Remans prior to Nemesis. We know that the Vulcans have some psychic abilities and that Romulans are offshoots of Vulcans and that Remans are offshoots of Romulans. There might be a little trickle of psychic ability left in them -- or maybe even strengthened, as a response to their environment.

Also, I read a book by Leonard Nimoy -- "I Am Spock" and he talked about what he was thinking about when trying to create how Spocky should act. He thought that hands and touching were important to the Vulcan people, which explains the "Live long and Prosper" salute and touching each other's heads in a mind meld.

Despite this, the movie still should have explained the Reman's psychic abilities more. Ah well. That was probably one of the kabijillion scenes cut out of the movie.

We know [...] that Remans are offshoots of Romulans.

We don't. There has never been an explanation as to who the Remans actually are. Romulan offshoot or native population of Remus. They could even be the original Romulans and then the renegade Vulcans exiled them to Remus. Who knows ...

Given that John Logan was the writer of that wretched remake of The Time Machine, I wouldn't put it past him to view the Remans and Romulans as similar to the Morlocks and Eloi — both the same species, but one developed radically differently over the millennia because of its environment.

That's what I thought when I originally saw the movie in the theatre. I was looking forward to seeing it in the DVD deleted scenes, but it wasn't there. Thanks for the comments. I'm glad someone agrees with me.
