I found the whole morale thing very lame and fake, especially how the crew responded to it, the reactions didn't seem natural at all.
I actually liked the selfish part in the beginning, painting Janeway as a captain who stopped for every little nebula they came by, and plunging the crew into another danger ... he seemed to be one of the few to think of what could happen and why the hell they didn't go "home" as fast as they could. A little selfish voice of reason so to say. Janeway could have done with some more of that during the 7 seasons.

Then, once he settled down with B'Ellana and had a family, I respected his character and thought that he was just a 90's kind of guy with a good heart. 
I think Tuvok at times was annoyed at Neelix cause he rambled on so.
