Need to settle a question re the DVD releases of TOS

Hey guys, new here and just had a discussion with a friend of mine.

Okay, so here's how I understood it: the first "Season Sets" (what I call the "eggshell" cases) had the original versions of the series, with the original special effects. Then later came the "Remastered" sets which came in more of a clear, sorta-rectangular plastic.

But this friend of mine... he absolutely insists that he used to own the eggshell release, but which had the CGI remastered effects!

We got into an argument about it because I was sure he had to have owned the later release, but he insists it was the eggshell. I even showed him pictures to be sure.

My first theory was "did you get these used?" but he claims he didn't.

So what's going on? Did some later printing of the eggshells actually have the CGI effects, did someone put the CGI discs in the older packaging, or is my friend just straight-up wrong?

Thanks in advance.

A lot of times, when you buy something "new" today, you're getting a used and reconditioned set, or even a counterfeit. I recently bought a complete series set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on a major retailer's website, but the order was fulfilled by some little store in Florida. It's a good-looking box set with professional photo-labels printed on the DVDs, but the discs appear to have been authored with consumer-grade software, and I suspect the whole box is a Chinese counterfeit. I had to buy a replacement on eBay for one of the seasons, due to non-working episodes.

The Star Trek set with original packaging but TOS-R fx is probably a counterfeit import. The crooks, probably a factory in China, threw it together with what they had. They upgraded their DVD authoring to the new fx at virtually no cost, but counterfeiting the new cases would require expensive retooling.

I have 2 copies of the 2nd Season of the EggShells and I played a bit from both and both are original FX but playing in German. I picked English. Oh well.
