I got an email back from the editor who okayed my pitch, and interestingly...with all the back and forth that went on in this thread...he suggested I take out the references to Trek lit. (He figured the general public will get bogged down with details; and, he's right...because showing my drafts to friends, they kinda got lost once I get into descriptions and commentary on Trek literature and my topic).
Overall he liked it, but suggested I do some additional tweaking before I turn it in again.
On the other hand, I know I mentioned working this for Palgrave Macmillian; however, I spoke with a former professor (via email) who actually wrote a book for this publisher. Apparently, I do have to have some 'credentials' (i.e. Ph.D, or some long history of scholarship since that is what the committee will look at in regards of proposals). I did email him my draft, and the editor's comments...and plan on keeping in touch with him.
This will be 'double duty' since I will be doing it for the magazine as well as for my senior seminar class...
*sigh*
Its going to be fun though since I'm passionate about this subject.
