Need help from REAL fans: Images of empty bridge

Guigue

Cadet
Newbie
Hi guys!

I'm working on a fan project, and we need to recreate the bridge of the Enterprise for some greenscreen work. Our best way of doing this is to start from original footage and add the actors on top.

Our best bet is to find shot with as few people as possible, and I was wondering if some of you guys could think of moments where we see the bridge completely empty for some reason. Also, we'll need different angles (like someone's station from up close) so anything could be useful.

Thanks a lot!

"This Side of Paradise" and "The Mark of Gideon" spring to mind.

Also TNG's "Relics".

EDIT: To see the station to the port side of the bridge up close, check out DS9's "Trials and Tribbleations."

I should have mentioned we want the Original Series only.

But I already have one great shot from "This side of Paradise"! You rock! :)

Welcome, but TNG's "Relics" did use a replica of Kirk's bridge built by (and I'm trying not to Google here) German fans to what looks like a fairly good standard.

DS9's "Trials and Tribbleations" also used a fairly good replica of the console, it looks like something you'd see Mr Kyle or Scotty using to Kirk's left.

Also, (and dammit I had to Google, I kept coming up the name "trial" in my head :brickwall:  ) the episode "Court Martial" had a close up of the control panel on Kirk's seat on the bridge.

Thank you so much I'll look into those great tips!

Could there be a featurette about the sets? I looked on the bonus features of the first season and there's nothing interesting

You're too far ahead of me there I'm afraid, I rely on super futuristic 23rd century tapes ;) The only feature I get with those is a brief behind the scenes with Koenig, Takei or Doohan.

Its not canon, but if you want to be extensive, an episode of TAS features a bridge defence mechanism of some sort. Can't remember which off the top of my head.

Beyond the Farthest Star is the TAS episode you're thinking of.

Can you ask someone making New Voyages for shots that you need?
The man has a point Guigue. You might consider making this request over in the Fan Productions forum as well. You'll find plenty of help there.

And welcome to the board! :)

From what I've heard, they used a small portion of that bridge replica (the captain's chair and part of the helm/nav console, IIRC), and the rest they composited in from "This Side of Paradise".

They also built a replica of the turbolift alcove and engineering console to have behind Doohan in close-ups, and then shot the same wedge behind Stewart in the reverse shots to make it look like the other side of the bridge. The composite from TSoP was in the shot where the holodeck doors open onto the bridge and Scotty walks in; in reality there was just a bluescreen behind the doors. All the other shots were tight so you couldn't see there was only a small portion of the bridge actually physically there.

And it's a shame, really, because logically Scotty would've asked the holodeck to recreate the engine room, not the bridge. But that would've been costlier to recreate.

When Scotty is either pissed or at extremes of emotion, which for the Scots and Irish is the same thing, he heads for the bridge (see TWOK)

As opposed to Bones, who just wandered around as he saw fit. Then again, he did have the classic doctor's preposition to cocktails.

In the episode "Wink of an eye" I think the ship was pretty well empty (from Kirk's point of view anyway).

I have a disc from Judgment Rites Collectors edition that let you tour the bridge. Its been so long since I have had it on my comp I don't recall to what extent but I remember looking around.

I also have the captains chair program that included the TOS bridge, again not had it on the computer I have now.

They may not even work with XP?

think there were a few where they go onto another ship that's been abandoned. And there was another where Kirk get kidnapped to a repica enterprise so he can spread a disease to an overpopulated planet.

And I think there was an NES game too. I may need to look for it myself. You could probably get the ROM somewhere.

Are you looking for still images or movies?

"The Omega Glory", good call.

"The Mark of Gideon", mentioned above.

No, the people were still visible to him, just frozen in time.

I'm pretty sure the only good, wide-angle shots of the empty bridge are in "This Side of Paradise" and "The Mark of Gideon." In other episodes where they go to other Connie-class bridges, they're on the bridge pretty much throughout the scene. The best you could hope for is maybe a split-second before they beam into the Defiant bridge in "The Tholian Web."

However, "The Omega Glory" provides some excellent reference shots of other parts of the ship without anybody in them -- including an empty engine room, which is bizarre, since Kirk and his landing party are in the engine room at the time as Kirk calls over the intercom to ask if anyone's aboard. (Perhaps the ship had two identical engine rooms?)

Here are the relevant "Omega Glory" screencaps:

Aside from the engine room, you get two corridors and the sickbay ward.

Here's a page from "Mark of Gideon":

Here you get the same empty engine-room shot, plus different corridor and sickbay shots, plus the transporter room as seen from the alcove. And one of the empty-bridge shots, which is shot from underneath one of the starboard consoles, an unusual angle.

Captain's Chair does not run under Windows XP. It worked great under Windows 95, but have not been able to run that program in a few years since upgrading. This would be a good reference if someone could get it to work. Anyone know how to get the program to run on XP?

Thank you for the link Christopher, that's VERY helpful!

I'll look into all your great tips! Thanks everyone!

PS: I contacted the New Voyages team. Hopefully that'll work!

You guys are forgetting that they went back, refurbished, and FINISHED the TOS bridge reconstruction for Enterprise's "In A Mirror Darkly"... :)
