Necktie rentals -- the cure for decision anxiety???

Anybody else here have to wear a tie where they work?

Over the past two or three years, I have seen a few necktie rental services pop up on the net. Fresh Necks, Tie Society and The Tie Guy are some examples. I am wondering what people think of these services. Would many people consider using this kind of service? The idea seems to have some merit, being able to have access to a greater variety without having to purchase every tie.

While wearing a rental tie doesn't necessarily seem like the way to impress people, I like the idea of being able to try wearing different ties before buying one. I've bought ties that I thought I would love when looking at them in the store, only to leave on the back of my tie rack after wearing once. Its really only after wearing one a few times, and not having people tell me to bury it somewhere, that I begin to really feel comfortable with a tie.

Anyone share this, or am I just crazy? If anyone has used one of these services I would especially love to hear from them.

I'm not an Armani type of guy, so my price range for ties may be set a bit lower than others, but are ties really so expensive now that you can't just buy several to cover most occasions without getting one from Rent-a-Swag and risking secondhand necksweat?

Besides, I'm one of those fashion heathens who wants to see their useless kind eventually be eliminated for good, not to have ties continue to be thrust upon the necks of hardworking men and lesbian talk show hosts like silk and cotton anchors for rent, dragging us inexorably down into an oblivion of pointless decorative accoutrements.

I only wear ties for job interviews and public hearings. It only took 7 years of college, but I won the right to wear jeans and boots and yet my day inside.

I love my ties. I have no reason to wear them, but you can amass a pretty good collection from second hand shops. Novelty ties, wedding ties (worn once).

I wear a tie because I want to, not because I need to.

Now, silliness aside: I don't wear a tie at work everyday, but I often do, especially when I give seminars or some other kind of public events.

I like good quality stuff but I'm not obsessed with designer clothes, so I usually buy them at small stores and tailor's shops and they are pretty cheap (lower pricing around €15-20). The selection might not be wide or current, but I almost exclusively wear solid-coloured ties, so that's not an issue. I was able to get a pretty large collection without going bankrupt.

So, I don't really see the point of renting them.

As a fellow academic, I only wear a tie at graduation and when I'm doing paid consultancy for people who expect to see you wearing a tie...

Sometimes I wear shorts at work, too. If it's hot and I am going to code all day/do menial stuff, I can't see why I should suffer for no reason.

Also, bermuda shorts with a nice short-sleeved shirt and boat shoes is totally appropriate summer attire in Italy.

Ties at their best are an accent, like a scarf only less in the way.

But if you actually think about them as a requirement to dress they are pretty stupid

Still, best to treat them as a creative expression if you cannot escape them. Women look hot in ties rather often
