I hadn't watched a complete basketball game since the last time the Celtics and Lakers routinely met in the finals (the Bird and Johnson days for the young'uns). I tuned in for game four for nostalgia's sake (my cousin and I were on opposite sides of the rivalry, as we are in most sports save hockey and it had been a long time since these two met in a meaningful way) and to see how much basketball has changed since I last followed it.
When the Lakers were up by 24, I nearly gave up on the game (old New England boy who was a fan of Bird, McHale and Parrish) but I decided to stick it out. What a comeback.
I noticed a couple of things--LA is now the "white" team (I know, not as "white" as the 50s and 60s Celtics but about as much as the Celtics were in the 80s). Defence is much tighter (like hockey today vs 20 years ago) which I suspect owes much to the "video age" of coaching. The players look in better shape. The "fast break" appears to be a lost art (though, admittedly, this impression is based only on one game--still, I remember the Denver Nuggets of the 80s who routinely scored 130+ points per game).
I think the Lakers are cooked. They have to be reeling from the comeback. The only thing in their favour is the longer break between games. If they'd played the next night, I think the Celtics momentum would have carried over. But the extra time off might give the Lakers a boost.
